It should, how- ever, be remembered that the conditions in that year were exceptional as regards the Cape of Good Hope and West Coast of Africa and the China Stations. Wounds received in action added 74 to the number of deaths in 1900, while in 1901 no cases of wounds in action are reported. The aggregate number of disease and injury recorded in the year 1901 furnishes a ratio of 853.83 per 1000, which shows a decrease of 28.40 per 1000 as compared with the ratio for 1900, and of 36,87 when contrasted with the average of the last four;
years. These figures compare favourably with the returns for 1890, in which year the case ratio was the lowest recorded since
1856, when these Reports were first published in their present form. The ratio of cases per 1000 of force shows a reduction on the East Indies, China, and Australia Stations, and in the Irregular Force, the China Station showing the substantial reduction of 363.1 per 1000. The invaliding ratio of the total Force, viz., 31.58 per 1000, shows a decrease of 4.25 as compared

A cold Canses a more abundant secretion of mucus, and when the lungs and bronchial tubes are inflamed, they are extremely sensitive to the irritation. Unless care is taken, the cold may result in pneumonia, which is swift and deadly. If the cold is a lingering one, the more leisurely but equally fatal consumption may set in. In the meantime, Captain Trous had arranged for a second tux to be sent later in the evening, anticipating that the Pas de Calais would be towed to the Downs and held there by the Granville. Communica- tion was made with Deal and Ramsgate, and tugs were ordered out in search of the disabled mail steamer. The watch on the South Goodwin lightship, it appears, saw the mail boat drifting on to the Sands, and
fired warning guns, which were quickly re- sponded to from different parts of the const. The Deal and Walmer lifeboats proceeded to the Sands, as also did some tugs which happened to he lying in the Downs.
About a quarter-past five the outward Belgian mail steamer, Prince Albert, left Dover for Ostend, and proceeded in the direction of the Goodwins. From a mess- age received through her wireless installa. tion, it appeared that she went alongside the disabled steamer and ascertained the position of affairs. Her wireless message was sent from off the Goodwins, and receiv el by the Ostend mail steamer Leopold II., lying alongside Dover Pier. This is thenge of research and experiment, when all nature, so to speak,iszansacked by the scientific for the comfort and happinessofman. Science las indeed made glant strides during the past century, and among the--by no means least important- discoveries in medicine comes that of Therapion, particulars of which will be found in another column. This preparation is unquestionably one of the most genuine and reliable Patent Medicines everintroduced, and has, we understand, been used in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Velpeau, Maisonneuve, the well-known Chassaiguse, and indeed by all those who are regarded as authorities in such matters, including the celebrated Lallemand, and Roux, by whom it Was some time since uniformly adopted, and thet It is worthy the attention of those whorequiresuch a remedy we think there is no doubt.. From the time of Aristotle downwards, a potent agent in the removal of these diseases has (like the famed phi- losopher's stone) been the object of search of some hopeful, generous minds; and far beyond the mere power if such could ever have been discovered-of transmuting the baser metals into gold is surely the discovery of a remedy so potent as to replenish the failing energies of the comfirmed roud in the one case, and in the other so effectually, speedily and safely to expel from the system without the ald, or even the knowledge, of a second party,the poisons of acquired or inherited disease in all their protean forms as to leave no taiat or trace behind. Suclr is The New French Remedy Therapion, which may certainly rank with, if not take precedence of many of the discoveries of our day, about which no little ostentation and noise tive been made,- and the extensive and ever-increasing demand that has been created for this medicine wherever intro- duced appears to prove that it is destined to cast into oblivion all those questionable remedies that were formerly the sole reliance of medical mies. Therapion may be obtained in England, direct from the proprietor, and of the principal Chemists and Merchants throughout the Colonies, India, China, Japan, &c., not even excluding such remote districts as Central Africa, the Fiji Islands, St. Heleua,&c.-DiamondFieldsAdvertiser KMBERLEY,
