Suicide of a British Soldier.

Charles Perkins, of B. Company, the Buffa, station- ed here, has committed suicido. The de- ceased appears to have been moody for some days past, and on the previous day burnt his letters. On parade, the Captain of his Company is said to have shouted out to him, Hurry up, do you think you're going to a funeral? The deceased told his comrades that it was enough for him, 'he was fed up.' Later he was seen getting out a razor, and some time afterwards his body was found in the latrino with the head

nearly severed from it. The deceased, who was undoubtedly insane, was buried last evening with a military funeral.

amendment was the expression of a hasty hog to announce that the HCNGKONG BRANCH of the aboro Company has bark Passengers, and from which there is

and ill-considered reaction and would be destructive of the present Army system.

Mr Belfour said it would be insane im- mediately to upset the system of linked battalions. The Army question was a twofold one, because it involved the pos sible defence of India as well as the defence of Great Britain. It would be unwise, he said, to leave ourselves for purposes of Indian defence denuded of the power of offence elsewhere.

a great centre of trade, if connected by rail

with Aden, and a great market for tobacco.

Caravans from several districts of Turkish CIGARETTES-

Arabia pass through; and thousands of people attend the weekly market.

The British troops buvé færmed camps inj three places to overawo robbers and render the caravan routes safe.

Road-Making in Somaliland,

A Berbera correspondent states that the road-making between Burns and the Uuper Sheikh (sic) is progressing rapidly, only a few miles being unfinished. The track-in- to be re-aligned in one part, giving a straighter roud and saving a few miles. Two now wells have been discovered, which have improved the route.

The flying coluinn at Bohotle will be ready to march out when required, carry- ing food and water for fourteen days. The total strength is a little under a thousand.

It is believed that the necessity has arison for pushing on from Bohotle to Mudug, so

as to send supplies through from Berbera to the Obbiat column.

It is probable that when the force leaves Obbiat it will abandon its base as being of no further use, owing to the monsoon and the bad harbour; and will join hands with the force operating from the Berbera side in the Mudug district, whence the future operations will be directed.

The Daily Exchange Quotation.

The Singapore Free Press of the 20th inst. says-Currency students will have noted the variations in the rate of exchange bo- tween Singapore and Hongkong since the

beginning of the year. On Jan. 2 it was premium, the weekly readings up to the end of the month being premium, par, par, par. In February the rate went below par, being for the four weeks 3-8, 1, 14 and 1 discount. On March 3 came the BLEND telegraphic announcement from Penang that the banks were not buying bills on China, and the rate went at once to 34 dia- count, and then to 4 on March 6, at which rate has becy practically constant since. Students of the subject and brokers will draw their own deductions from this rapid variation from a slight premium to a 4 per cent discount in the course of less than three months. What seems te have happened is that the banks and merchants havo apparently taken 1/8 as a safe rate

Queen

The Queen has ever evinced warm in- terest in the welfare of nurses, and her latest act, when, accompanied by the King, she opened the residential wing for the nursing personel of Herbert Hospital at Woolwich, has been much appreciated by the profession. Alexandra also presented medals to the ladies who are attached to the Army as members of Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service. Her Majesty had herself designed these medals, which consisted of an openwork oval, contain- ing the Danish cross, surmounted by the Royal Crown, and having the letter A in the centre. A special honour was the fact that the medals were at tached to ribbon which can only be used by ladies of the Royal Household or by members of the Royal Victorian Order. Much time was spent inspecting the various uniforms; those of the matrons, in grey alpaca and broad scarlet cuffs, being peculiarly attractive,

A good try at goal by Cuttell was the next flash of football. The paeo set in the first stages the kicking on both sides being sometimes of the game was beginning to show itself;

may represent £1,000, more or less, pay- able to the assured at Sixty Years of age, should he live so long, or upon his death should he not, and a thousand pounds is a let of money when looked at from the standpoint of a paltry £25!
