Bovril has layed such a conspicuous part in South Africa that it forms no in- considerable feature of the story.
Lancet has had frequent references C. E. LeMUNYON'S to Bovril in the reports of the officers of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Nearly every newspaper correspondent has had to refer to Bovril to make his story complete. Rudyard Kipling and Baden-Powel! have written their Bovril stories. Over 500 British hospitals and similar public in- stitutions use and prescribe Bovril, not beef tea, bút Bovril.
The reason is not far to seek. Bovril is ancurnisher as well as a atimulant. It contains the albumen and fibrine, the. sustaining properties of the beef. It is this fact, together with its absolute purity, that commends Bovril to physcians and scientists, and proves in practice what it demonstrates in analysie.

Stroke; of personally looking after the railway arrangements, for the comfort of the Empress Dowager when she starts for the Western inusolen, and the telegraph com- munications for which he is in a measure still responsible. The real meaning of the trip has, however, a much deeper signi ficande; nothing less than a determined effort to wrest back the power and prestige of which he was lately so unexpectedly and ruthlessly shorn through the instru mentality (perhaps a harsher term may be used) of Viceroy Yuan Shih-kai Rolying upon his present power and his influence over the Empress Dowager, the overbearing manners and haughty dis regard of the feelings of even the most powerful at Court such, for instance, as the notorious chief eunuch Li Lien-ying, of Viceroy Yuan have raised most bitter It is stated that enemies against himself. alarmned at the rapidly rising power of the Viceroy this chief eunuch has come for- ward as the self-elected champion of Shing Kung-pao, and has been heard to declare to his intimates that Yuan Shih-k'ai's progress must be stopped at all costs. Do you know,' continued the eunuch wrathfully, Yuan has attempted to lesson even my influence with the Empress Do- wager? This I can never forgive, Shêng has been almost extinguished by the new upstart. I will now make it my ambition to restore Shông Kung-pao his honours, and more too, just for the sake of spiting our mutual enemy. If there is present any one who is intimate with Sheng Kung-pao, Toll him to come tell him what I now say. to Peking and I will help him to the best of my power. Let Yuan then beware!'
Sheng Kung-pao has now actually gone up to Peking and time will show whether the eunuch can make good his words or not,
