be due to large purchases To be obtained of Messrs Kruse & Co., in 1/4-lb. tins. regular ferry service to Hongkong,
shortly to be made for India,
The prospect of an immediate rise in the price of the tical had hardly been taken into account here, and may throw calcula- tions out in some cases, It is anticipated that exporters will complain, but the Government has laid down a definite pro- gramme of what will happen in the event of a rise in the dollar, and wo tako it there is no question but that progranumo will be adhered to. The exporters had a very long innings of prosperity when the rest of the community were suffering and the rise in the value of the Tical will eventually be for the benefit of all. It is said that sellers of sterling bills have been refusing the Banks' buying rate for the last fow days, so little was any immediate increase looked for.
On the 12th inst., the Bangkok Times says-As wo antfeipated yesterday, the Government selling rate of the tical is now 182 to the pound sterling. This is the result of the Singapore dollar going a fraction over 18. 8d., and there will no doubt be hopes that the present hardening of the silver market will go a bit further still.
The output of the new Mint yesterday was over 40,000 ticals, and as the altern- tions required in the machinery fro completed a further large increase will be effected.

It should be borne in mind that the China Station is a greater distance from Home, a fact which necessitates more of the repair work being done here, and as the weight and character of the vessels change there is less likelihood of their recall to England to refit at the end of each commission. An increase of the squadron way also be reckoned upon as a certainty. The Far Eastern squadrons of other Powers-notably Russia-are being increased, and it is noteworthy that in Port Arthur alone Russia has vastly moro docking accommodation than is pro- vided at Hongkong.
