Hamburg, and made it into coke at a cost that rendered competition possible with the British article in the Baltic ports, so the quantity imported in 1901 was only about onehalf of that in the preceding year. The Westphalian and Silesian are the principal German fields, but others exist, not reckoning lignitë, with a total estimated store of 109 milliard tons. Here, evidently, the price of coal raised at home and imported from Great Britain generally differs but little, so that the trado is very sensitive to any iluctuations. American collieries have attempted to com- pete with us in the German market, but at present without success, as their prices are too high. Russia levies a heavy import duty to protect her own fields, and encourage their development. This is which is injurious
coal, preferred for many purposes, since the Russian, though good for cooking, contains much sulphur, and is liable to spontaneous combustion. It will probably be some time before that country can export any appreciablo quantity. In other parts of the world there are, outside the British Doninions, many possibilities, but only China has great fields, one actuality. which, however, are so undeveloped that she is a considerable importer-over We are 1,150,000 tons were taken in 1901. not, however, surprised to learn that Japanese coal threatens to oust that from Cardiff. [As a matter of fact, cardiff coal cannot compete with Japanese coal in the Far East, the Welsh coal coming cast of Suez being used almost entirely by naval ships. -ED. C.M.] But the United States takes the first place for the amount raised, and still more for reserve under ground. The former in 191 was 235,000,000 tons (of 2000 pounds - each) of bitumin- ous chat nud about 61,000,000 tons of
anthracite in the one case about 9 per cent., in the other nearly 15 per cent.. more than in the previous year, It is im- ported from British North America; in re- turn nearly four times as much is exported. The total import was about 1,941,000 tons in the year ending June 30, 1942, and tho export not quite 7,000,000 tons, both show- ing some falling off from the previous year. Of the latter less than 1,000,000 tons went to Europe, so that here the United States
is not at present a formidable competitor. -The Standard:

There has been also an increase in the number of men who have made use of the launch on weekdays to attend the concerta and Temperance meetings. The Star Coffee House was closed during the year, and on this the report RAYS:-
The Committee greatly regret that about the middle of the year it was found necess. ary to close the 'Star' Coffee House. The premises were very unsuitable, the locality away from the min stream of traffic and the rent high. When the lease expired a demand for a considerable increase in the rent was made by the landlord, and as this would have made a very heavy drain upon the very slender funds available for general purposes, to which the Star Coffee House is already considerably in debt, it was thought better to close the house and to give time and energy rather to the endeavour to provide a Sea- men's Institute (on a permanent basis) which should be the property of the Mis. sion. The Lord Bishop of the Diocese is very kindly seeking to interest friends in England in this matter and has already re ceived support: Such an Institute in con- noction with our church would be a great boon to many sailors who want a quiet place of recreation, a d also to men-of-war's men, British and American, and merchant seamien ashore for the night, for numbers of whom, in spite of the accommodation already provided by other institutions, there is frequently no decent and respectable shelter. The public service of Hongkong, so far as his Lordship's experi- ence wont-and probably the experience of the jury was the same, was that it was a very clean service. There had been times when doubt was thrown upon it, and there was a time, as the jury knew, when there was a very serious slur upon the police force, when charges were made against members of that force that they were obtaining bribes from gaming houses in the Colony.
