note in the course of which he stated that there is a widely-spread belief, both amongst natives and the white sojourners in West Africa, that the presence of a certain species of plant in a room drives away mosquitos, and that in fact a single plant is sufficient to clear a
room.
Major J. A. Burdon, of the Cameron Highlandera, recently brought home from Northern Nigeria a few leaves of this plant, which Mr Shipley submitted to Mr H. H. W. Pearson and the plant has been identified by the experts at Kow as Ocimum viride, Villd. It is a member of“ the order Labialne, which grows from Sene, gambia southwards to Angola.,

of 335 feet.
In clear weather, the Red lights should have a range of visibility of milos, and the White ones a range of 10 miles.
A White light will also be exhibited from sunset to sunrise on the forestay at a height of 6 feet above the rail, to show the direction in which the Light-vessel is head- ing.
During foggy or thick weather, a gong will be sounded at intervals of one minute. If the Light-vessel be driven from her proper position to one where she is of no use as a guide to shipping, the usual lights will not be exhibited, but a small fixed Red light will be shown at each end of the vessel; the ball will be struck as soon as possible and, until struck, it will be surmounted by a Red flag
N. B.-It may possibly happen that one or both of the vertical lights on one yard arm of the temporary Light-vessel may be obscured by her own mast to a vessel that is approaching her when she is swinging

Major Burdon, who is Rosident of the Nupe Province, Northern Nigeria, and Hausa Scholar of Christ's College, Cam- bridge, states that the leaves were given to him by Captain H. D. Larymore, C.M.G., Resident of the Kabba Province. Captain
sequence of having been told by a native living in the low-lying part of the native town of Lokoja that the use of this plant protected from the swarms of mosquitos which existed there. The plant grows wild, though not abundantly, in the neigh- bourhood, and specimens obtained were planted in pots and boxes. Captain Lary- more found that the presence of one of these plants in a room undoubtedly drove the mosquitos out, and that by placing three or four around his bed at night he was able to sleep unmolested without using a micsquito net. Major Burdon added that this was very strong
testimony, for he knew from experience that the house in which Captain Larymore was living was infested with mosquitos. Mr Shipley gives the following extract from the fifth volume of Sir W. T. This:el- ton-Dyer's Flora of Tropical Africa:

the leaves mixed with ginger and black pepper is given in India in the cold stages of intermittent fever; the leaves are also used as a seasoning in cooking.
The important point, however, is, as Mr Shipley points out, to ascertain whether the growing plant is really efficacious as a preventive-that is to say, does-it "really ropel the mosquito? If so, there seems some ground to hope that in this easily cultivated plant man has another weapon with which to fight malaria.
[Doubtless the attention of His Excellency the Governor has been called to this matter by his expert advisers, and doubtless ho has already ordered that supplies of the plant may be secured for Hongkong and planted in tho malarious corners of the Colony.-E., C.M.]

By his conduct their tyranny is delightful. he was doing that which would make the Women and Girls' Protection Ordinanco futile. He visited the woman next day, and informed her that he had talked to his fokis, who said the bribe was not sufficient. He wanted $50, and made an appointment to meet the woman's husband in a tea shop. Several interviews took place, and at one of these a member of the detective stall was present.
A witness for the defence, sub-opium formior for Macao, stated that he gave the woman an introduction to the defendant. He met the defendant in the Club, and in consequence of this conversation Ho Tak was sent for on the 19th February. The defendant and she talked together. His introduction consisted of a card. It was inconvenient to write.

The notion of the King in appointing a Royal Commission to deal with the vexed question of transit and locomo- tion in London has been received with both sorrow and delight. There are many schemes afloat at present for the building of underground electric tube railways, but Parliament will not be able to grant the necessary power for these to be proceeded with until the Commission have formally reported as to their decision. However, it is felt that something must be done to relieve the congested traffic which day by day causes serious annoyance and loss of valuable time. London is a City of byways and a few main thoroughfares. and down these principal streets rolls, a never-ending tide of trams, omnibuses, motors, carts, wagons and pedestrians, When two big arteries cross one an- other, traffic is often suspended for ten minutes, and not the most daring world chance finding their way in and out of the confused mass of vehieles, Electric trams and railways have partially solved the difficulty of bring-know what to expect, since on the shore in
