THE CURRENCY OF SIAM.

The Government Proposals. The Bangkok Times of the 4th inst. Hays:There is an idea in come quarters, which is causing a cortain amount of un- caginces, that the Government is contem- plating a compulsory isine of Currency Notes, in view of the scarcity of ticals, An we mentioned a couple of days ago this suggestion has been made, in commercial circles, that it might be well for the Government to make the paper currency compulsory tender for large amounts throughout the country until the stringency

and hence creditors are bound to accept them in payment of dues to any amount, but all such notes are immediately con- vertiblo into ticals on presentation at the Currency Office. A man may, however, make it a condition of his doing business that he shall be paid in silver, and the currency notes can only make their way very gradually in tho Inteior. It is recognised that to enable them to mako their way the essential principles Inid down in the Paper Currency Act must be understood, and further that there must be general confidence in these principles being strictly adhered to. The Government, we may say, has no inten- tion of departing from these essential principles on which its currency note scheme is based; viz: (1) issue against ticals only; and (2) immediate converti- bility into ticals on prosentation at effice of issue. According to the last monthly report signed by the Minister of Finance the whole of the coin received in ex- change for the notes is retained in the office as a reserve to pay those notes on presentation, and under the Act at least 75 per cent of it must be so rotained while the balance may be invested in first-class securities particulars of which must be given in the monthly reports.

Hongkong Tides.

The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the ysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9,

The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to bo 4 feet 3 inches bolow mean sea level."

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
