TORTURE IN THE TWENTIETH CENTURY,

A writer gives in Cussell's Magazine some gruesome details of prison life and tortures in Morocco. The latter are so reminiscent of the Middle Ages and the Inquisition, that one almost forgets that this is the twentieth century. He says:-

The torture of offenders, real and suspected, has been, and is still, much practised. Much ingenuity is shown in the infliction of pain-such devices as tho rubbing of red pepper into the eye-balls, pulling out the tongue with a fish-hook, tying up the wrists at a height from the ground. At the death of the late Sultan a pretender proclaimed himself the rightful heir to the throne, and had a certain success. Whon

Though the cost of making finest toilet nearly dou- soaps has nearly bled, the retail price, in- gredients, and superior quality of Vinolia Soap remain unchanged. For the complexion.

THE CHINA MAIL.

presently overcome by the legitimate autho. THE CHINA LIGHT & POWER

rities, he was seized, bound, and thrown

down, when chillies were applied to the insideof his mouth till it swelled in exquisite

pain, and he was desired to shout out his titles and qualities as much as he pleased, boing, of course, unable to utter a word. Aftor that ho was thrown into gaol to rot there till he died. A refinement of cruelty is the torture by the iron glove,' as it is called. A lump of quicklime is placed in a man's hand, which is closed up into a fist. | 245 Then the fist is tightly bound with leather thongs and plunged into a tub of cold water. The agony soon becomes extreme. The torture is continued for eight or ten days, until in the end mortification ensues and probably death.

Ttract now bears, in addition to the HE well-known Liebig Company's Ex-

blue signature J. v. Liebig, a new namo made from the Liebig's Extract of Meat Company's initials, LEMCO-such a simple device to prevent mistakes, we wonder was not thought of before.

LONDON LETTER.

(From Our Own Correspondent.)

LONDON, January 30. The reign of the shoe is seriously threatened, and it seems we are to minke a determined effort to return to the days when civilisation was nigh in its infancy. Some enterprising bootmakers in the West End are exhibiting sandals for ladies' evening wear, and they assure anxious enquirers that they have many customers, but that these are generally the possesssors of small feet and ankles, and who are, therefore, not averse to an unusual share of public

attention.

The marriage of the Earl of Kin. noull and Miss Darell will be remem. bered as one of those very few occasions when the rule that the bridesmaids should be dressed in white was broken away from and at the same time the charm and beauty of the ceremony were preserved, if not indeed enhanced, The colours of the bridegroom's family (red and white) were used in these extremely effective costumes, which had little red velvet contees trimmed with tassels and paste buttons, and skirts

SHIELD.

The First of the Semi-Finals. At the Happy Valley yesterday, before a large crowd of spectators, the semi-final tie in the Hongkong Football Shield Com- petition between B' Company, Sher- wood Foresters, and H.M.S. Argonaut was played. The soldiers kicked off, but the sailors got possession of the ball, and in a few minutes they had opened the scoring. There was some good play on both sides, but the back d vision of the soldiers' team could not hold the sailors in check, and the first half closed with the score :- Argonaut, 5 goals; 'B.' Co., 0.

The second period was all in favour of the sailors, who won easily. Score:- Argonaut, 8 goals; 'B' Company, 0.

It has been arranged to play the other semi-final to-morrow, the contesting teams being H. M. S. Ocean and H. M. S. Glory, Both teams are in fine form, so' a good game is assured. It is unfortunate for the Glorys that they have lost the services of Lieut. Sherbrooke, who went home by

the P. and O. mail steamer on Saturday to undergo a course of gymnastic instruc- tion at Aldershot, preparatory to taking up a now appointment. The final tie for the the Argonaut and the winners of Thurs- Shield will be played on Saturday betwcon day's tie.

Mornington House, Harrogate.

My attention having been drawn to Stearns' 'Wine of Cod Liver Oil with Peptonate of Iron,' I have pleasure in tell. ing you that I can recommend this prepara- tion to the public as the best medicine I have found containing cod-liver oil. It is so elegantly prepared that the taste is not at all perceptible. It is most valuable as a tonic, as well as a vehicle for cod liver oil, pleasant to the taste, and easily as- similated. I can highly recommend cod liver oil taken in this form as most beneficial.

A WONDERFUL DISCOVERY. This is thenge of research and experiment, when all nature, so to speak, isransacked by the scientific for the comfort and happiness of man.. Science has indeed made giant strides during the past century, and among the-by no means least important discoveries in medicine comes that of Theraplon, particulars of which will be found in another column. This preparation is unquestionably one of the most genuine and reliable Patent Medicines everintroduced, and has, we understand, been used In the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostau, Jobert, Velpeau, Maisonneuve, the well-known Chessaignac, and indeed by all those who are regarded as authorities in such matters, including the celebrated Lallemand, and Roux, by whom fi was some time since uniformly adopted, and that It is worthy the attention of those whorequiresuch remedy we think there is no doubt. From the time of Aristotle downwards, a potent agent in the removal of these diseases has (like the famed phi- losopher's stone) been the object of search of some hopeful, generous minds; and far beyond the mere power-if such could ever have been discovered-of transmuting the baser metals into gold la surely thediscovery of a remedy so potent as to replenishi the failing energies of the comfirmed roue in the one case, and in the other so effectually, speedily. and safely to expel from the system without the aid, or even the knowledge, of a second party, the polsons of acquired or inherited disease in all their prolean forms as to leave no taint or trace behind. Bnch is The New French Remedy Therapion, which may certainly rank with, if not take precedence of, many of the discoveries of our day, about which no little ostentation and noise have been made, and the extensive and ever-increasing demand that has been created for this medicine wherever intro- duced appears to prove that it is destined to cast into oblivion all those questionable remedies that. were formerly the sole reliance of medical meu. Therapion may be obtained in England, direct from the proprietor, and of the principal Chemists and Merchants throughout the Colonica, India, China, Japan, &c, not even excluding such remote districts as Central Africa, the Fijl Islands, BL. Helens,&c.-Diamond Fields Advertiter, KIMBERLEY Sold by A 8. WATSON & Co., Liinitro,
