HOUSEHOLD FURNITURE,

Uranus, and its orbit had been calculated; for, since the planete all move in ellipses about the sun, the path of each can be determined after making the necessary observations. But when that of Uranus was carefully watched, it was seen

to differ slightly from tho course · ́as- eigned by theory. Something evid ently was interfering with it, because cach member of the solar system exercises an attraction on the others which increases with the quantity of matter with the distance. Independently, and almost simultaneously, Adams. of England, and Leverrier, of France, determined, by mathematical calculations, the position of the yet more remote disturbing planet with wonderful accuracy, and it was soon mark ed down in the sky by the telescopes of observatories. Here, howevor, the optical instrument could make visible what the naked eye could not see, but there are many celestial bodies which not even the best of tolescopes can rareal. These are de- tected in quite another way. We often talk of the fixed stars, and such, for all practical purposes, those almost infinited distant suna appear to be; but now that they are studied with the more ponet in struments of modern research, not only is. ench found to have a motion of its own across the blue background of infinity," but also not a few of them seem to exhibit other movements, one being slightly escillatory, like distant skater cutting small circles around a glove on the ice. The light of Algol seems to fade at regular intervals of nearly three days, besides swaying contly backwards and forwards. If the luminous star were unequally yokod to a dull. heavy companion, and the two were revolving, as they would have to do, around a common centre, the result would be the phenomena observed. There may he hundreds of like cases, but it will be rare for the two to be so rotating that, when viewed from the earth, the ono colipises the other. The Dog Star-Sirios―as, por- haps, might be expected, is unsteady in its ways, and this, too, is believed to be coupled with a dull dog. But we do feel shocked when told that our emblem of 433- stability, the Pole Star, swings backwards and forwards, and, so far from being the centre of the celestial u iverio. is clearly under the influence of unseen powers be hind the throne. These-probably, there are two at least are quite invisible, for what could disclose a dark globe, however argent a distance where even our sur would be a more point of light? Yet we cannot doubt their presence. earth, as we know, moves through a part of space which is full of similar bodi-s-of- ten sinal unused material littering the shooting stars when exposed to the friction celestial expanse-which blaze up to of our atmosphere, and, from time to time, tumble down on our earth. The faint, luminous cloud spots called nabula are sup- posed to originate in swarms of such meteo- rites, which, dashing one against the other, become botter and hotter from incessant collision, till at last they are more or less volatilised and are recognisable as a nebula. The distances of stellar space are so enor- mous the abysses of that ocean so un- fathomable that there is room enough and to spare for vast quantities of invisible material, since the nearest star is so far away that the light from it, travelling at the rate of one hundred sud eighty-six thousand miles a second, takes four years to come to us. Some Good Stories.

:

Dialect and Dialogue'. was the at- tractive title of a lecture which Mr Pett Ridge gave at the Society of Women -Journalists recently. It is needless to say that he whiled away a couple of hours in the most delightful, humorous way. Mr W. W. Jacobs was in the chair. The lecture was as amusing as the best of atories from the pen of the author of 'Mord Emily,' with a witty porface and epilogue by the author of Many Cargoes.' Good wer the stories told; but as Mr Pett Ridge wisely gave a warning to all writers to bo chary in the use of dialect, I can only hope to

No war could be ended by a Fleet alone, or by a Citizen Army; it were folly to doprive ourselves of the means of offence.

The Municipality of Singapore has addressed a letter to Government, in favour of exchange-fixity. In this letter, it was pointed out that the Municipality was n large importer from gold-using countries, that the revenue for the year
