Considering the question, what is a volcano a writer in Engineering says that it in no easy matter to describe such a gig- antic and complex terrestrial phenomenon, with all its accompanying, accessories and ramifications, and the task is rendered still more difficult by our comparative ignorance of the subject. of the primary formation of igneous rocks, It is needful to go far into the vast past, and to strive to grasp the conception of the prime root and foundation of matter; the atom, the electron, the ion, and the vortex molecules. Then let us extend our thoughts to a beautiful of Laplace's consideration hypothesis of the condensation of nebulous matter in space, and afterwards to Lord Kelvin's theory of the earliest consolidation of the world on which we dwell. The writer in Engineering believes Lord Kelvin has surmised that there was a period in the evolution of the earth when he as- sumed that a solid nucleus was covered by an ocean of lava 40 kilometers (25 miles) deep, the assumption implying that the specific gravity of the liquid lava was about 2.50. for Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup it is doubt- ful if I should be here to-day to describe my experiences. My ailment was chronic bilioveness and dyspepsia. Words are inadequate to convey a conception of my sufferings during that miserable period. I was then a tailor's machinist, employed in that capacity by Messrs. Götterson & Smith, of the Royal Arcade, Sydney. Ordinary food was poison to me, and I was abliged to exist on soda-water, milk, plain biscuits, and dry toast. Even that fare would sometimes distress me to au intolerable degree. My skin turned sallow, my eyes sank and were surrounded by dark, hollow circles. I slept only by fits and starts, my slumbers being hanated and harassed by horrible dreams and nightmares. There was dull continuous pain between, my shoulders and in my right side. I grew thinner, until I was reduced to mere skin and bone, and hecame so weak that I could hardly walk to my place of business. Often the rise of my sewing-machine, and the close air af the workroom, would bring on a splitting healachie that maddened me. Then there were fits of retching ane vomiting, which troubled me with great frequency. When there was nothing in the stomach to come up. I would retch and strain until became exhausted and faint, when my workinates would improvise a couch for me with their cloaks and jackets, and I would lie the for hours unable to move, I was treated by three doctors; but I believe the medicines they prescribed irritated my stomach ond did me more harm than good. After four years of misery I was persuaded to try what Mother Seigel's Curative. Syrup could do for me, and within a few days bedan to miend at such at rate that everyone who knew me was amazed at the improvement in my condition. The vomiting ceased, the hue of health returned to my cheeks. my eyes brightencil, and at the end of two months I was in every respect thoroughly .cured.* :

The Hon, J.J. Boll-Irving resigned the post of Chairman on his leaving the Colony in May last, and the Hon. C. W. Dickson filled the vacancy. The Hon. C. S. Sharp was elected on the 22rd December, 1901, to fill the vacancy occasioned by the re- signation of Mr H. E. Polluck, K.C.; nud the latter has since rejoined the Committee. Mr H. Hursthouse acted as Secretary in May and Jane during Mr Bowley's absence.
STATE OF THE BUILDING.
In August, 1901, the interior of the building was redecorated, the electric light extended to the entrance hall, staircase, corridors, Chamber of Commerce, and card room, and the doors of the Museum glazed, at a cost of $2,620. The usual annual ex- amination of the building was inado by the architects, Messrs. A few minor repairs necessitated by white ants were effected, The amount spent on ordinary repairs during the twelve months ending 30th June, 1902, was $1,698.91.

During the year ending 30th June the theatre was let to the Amateur Dramatic Club, Mr Dallas, the Australian Vaudeville Company, the Empire Comedy Company, Messrs Coghill and Sutton, Baroffski's

THE LIBRARY.

The use of the library as a free reading- room and chess room has been maintained, and the free lending collection was well patronised. 35 books published in Hong; kong were deposited in the Library, and 220 books were presented to the lending collection, bringing it up to 700 vols. Newspapers and periodicals have been kindly presented by members of the Com- mittee, by Mr H. A. Allen, Mr Barton, Mr Bowley, Mr H. A. Ritchie, Mr H. E. Tom- kins, and the Hongkong Club, and by the proprietors of the local newspapers and of the Government Gazette, The number of visitors to the Library during the 12 months was 11,338 non-Chinese and 5,033 Chinese: the number of ticket holders for the lending collection was 103 on 30th June, 1902.

We have seen the proof sheets of a short article by John Foreman (author of the standard work on the Philippine Islands) dealing with the salient features of the political life of the late Senor Sagasta, the Spanish statesman. Hongkong Tides.
The tide table given below has been compiled at the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table corresponds with the zero of the soundings in the Admiralty Charts which has been found to be 4 feet 3 inches below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gaugo at the Victoria Naval Yard_add 3 feet 4 inches, and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 10 feet 6 inches to the height given in the table.
