ROUND THE WORLD. IN TWENTY SEVEN DAYS.
It is now a good many years since Julès Verne thought that the notion of a man travelling round the world in eighty days was sufficiently extravagant to be the theme of one of his characteristic dreams of science, Which of us does not recall the rapture with which he followed the progress of Mr Phineas Fogg, his pursuit by De- tective Fix, and the humour of his valet Passpartout, who left his master's bedroom gas burning, and had to pay the bill, while his master was pocketing the wager that had inspired the trip?
A NEW RECORD,
In 1886 Miss Nellie Bly took the romarloe... out of Jules Verne's story by travelling round the world in seventy-two and a quar-

Bly round the world has just printed an article attempting to show that it will soon be possible to perform the journey in twenty-seven days.
AMERICAN PACE,
Naturally the scheme is worked out ow American.lines, and it is not particularly inspiring to English readers to find that American trains and German ocean liners are the chosen instruments of this rapid tour. The twenty-four hour express between. Chicago and New York, and the twenty-six mile an hour speed of the great German steamships onable the traveller to cover the distance between Chicago and Hamburg in nine and a half days. From Hamburg to Vladivostock, 7,500 miles across Europe and Asia, the milroads is already built.
AMERICAN ORGANIZATION. Between Vladivostock and Seattle lie 7,000 miles of the Pacific Ocean. At pre- eent this voyage requires eighteen days or more; but a fust steamor insking twouty- six miles an hour would cross in ten and a quarter days. From Seattle back to Chica go is a distance of 2,300 miles, and might be travelled with a well-organised express system in two hours less than two days. 357 Thus, with the locomotives and steamships already in regular service, with the railways already built, and the ocean routes already traversed, it is possible to circle the globe. -n distance of 22,600 miles-in twenty- Seven days.

WHAT A PRESENTATION IS THE CHINA LIGHT & POWER
IN CHINA.
The N.-C. Daily News thus speaks on the question of the presentation of one hundred golden Buddhas to the Empress Dowager in commemoration of her seven- tieth birthday anniversary next year, as reported from the North, it seems, is one of precedent. The same thing was done in the early days of the present dynasty (1062/1704) upon the attainment of the seventieth birthday anniversaries of the 246 Emperors K'ang. Hsi and Chien Lung.

ancestral hoards and the golden hoard CAPSTAN TOBACCO
of their husbands, Manchu and Mongoal Princosses and Duchesses shall contribute the precious metal for the casting of the Buddhas in question, but, of course of a size much smaller than those mado over two centuries ago. The losses incurred by the Tartar nobility in 1900 from both Boxers as well as Foreign troops, however, raised a protest from Imperial Princes and Dukes, when told of it, and so other Bggestions have been made by the flat- horers of the Empress Dowager, who have put her on a pedestal equal in height to the two great Emperors named above whose Dragon Throne she has usurped. One of these suggestions is that the Viceroys, Go- Vercors and Tartar Generals in the pro- vinces should be commanded to present the Buddhas, that is to say, all and sundry can be made to put their hands to their parses, all bat the suggesters and flatterers themselves. In the end, however, we can easily foretell that the unlucky farmers, traders, and merchants will be bled for the purpose and something extra' besides- to compcusate the collectors of these so-
Bed voluntary contributions from a loyal population, as a token of undying admiration of the virtues and high qualities of her Imperial Majesty. May she have myriad years!

THE DOCK COMPANY. To the Editor of the "CHINA MAIL.'
February 24, 1903. SIR, Referring to the suggested Pro- vident Fund, vetoed at the meeting yester- offer the European staff interest at the rate of 6 per cent. for any portion not exceed ing 20 por cent. of their salaries which they may care to leave with the Company, the amount deposited to be payable on say 48 or 72 hours' notice. This, I think, would be a boon to the employees, and as the Company have always a dobit balance at the bank, would be no loss to the Company other than the clerical labour involved. Yours &c.,

THE BONUS QUESTION. To the Editor of the 'CHINA Mail.' 24th February, 1903. SIR,-As a shareholder in the Hongkong and Whampoa Dock Company, who was prevented from attending the meeting yes. terday, I desire to support what was said by Mr Hewitt concerning the phrase 'wo shareholders.' There was hardly a word of the opposing party-certainly nothing about the Provident Fund-with which I had the slightest sympathy; and assuredly the remarks about the Staff were entirely uncalled for. Doubtless many shareholders will agree with this disclaimer; and I must say the defeat of a well-meant scheme like that put forward by the Board was a sur- prise to many.

"The Second in Command.'
The Second in Command took us into a somewhat deeper school of comedy than that of Are you a Mason? Capt. Marshall's play is not altogether to be treated in lighter vein. It has plenty of a refined sort of humour, but it has, withal, a pathos which makes us wonder whether it is more satisfying to laugh than it is to have a good cry, (in the heart, of course), as Mrs Henry Wood would say. Before a packed house, the Brough Co. gave a capital inter; protation of the piece on Saturday night. The Kit Bingham of Mr Brough is one of the very best roles he has over essayed..

2nd. To the glory of a complete and per- fected humanity. We speak of saving the ANNAM, soul. The immortality of the soul is an expression not found in Scripture. Christ brought light and immortality to spirit, soul and body. The scripture sets forth clearly the value of a redeemed body, and men will never know the sin of impurity or the joy of purity till they know what is meant by the redemption of the body.
3rd. To the glory of pluce und power. Christ's High Priestly prayer has the peti- tion Father, I will that those whom thou gavest, me be with me. To restore the multitude who have washed their robes,' God has poured out the resources of His being. The question is not merely shall I go to heaven or to hell, but shall I be the companion of God. How can inan give himself to sin when God is doing all this to bring him back to glory.
