more pretentious modern names contain none of the NUTRITIVEro- perties of beef. Baron Liebig himself admitted this fact; there is not a doctor to day disputes it. Used as a nourishment. Meat Extract is probably the most ex pensive article one can buy. Bovril one of the cheapest,

Erica obtained the irside berth at Kowloon Rock and got ahead of Bonito. Thero was no further change at the Channel Rocks, although at one time it appeared that Colleen would gain considerably by keeping to the Northward. Running to Moyer's Buoy, Erica and Bonito passed 245. Colleen, but Bonito dropped to fourth place through failing to round the mark at the first gybo. The order was unchanged dur- ing the second round, though the second and third boats drow up considerably on the leader. TO PREVENT CROUP, EGIN in time. The first symptom is hoarseness, this is soon followed by a peculiar rough cough, which is easily recog- nized and will never be forgotton by one who has heard it. The time to act is when the child first becomes hoarse. If Cham- berlain's Cough Remedy is freely given, all tendency to croup will soon disappear. Even after the croupy cough has developed, it will prevent the attack, There is no danger in given this remedy as it contains nothing injurious. It always cures and cures quickly. IN CRIMINAL SESSIONS. (Before His Honour Sir William Goodman,
Chief Justice).
Wednesday, February 18, 1903.
Sir H. S. Berkeley, Attorney-General, (instructed by Mr F. B. L. Bowley, Crown Solicitor) prosecuted.
VESPERATE THIEVES.
Chan Kai and Lau Sung were charged with robbery at Wongneiwa on the 28th December. Prisoners pleaded not guilty.
Sir Henry Berkeley said that the case was a very serious une, inasmuch as the robbers were armed with deadly weapons which they did not hesitate to use. A second charge of wounding with intent was preferred against Lau Sung, who had made A statement which was practically an numis- sion of the crime. He said be bad aquarrel with the complainant, and that he wont to the house to boat him, not to steal. The complainant was a gardener, and on the night in question he was lying in a matshed when he heard a suspicious poise. He believed that some people wore entering his house, so he jumped up, ran into the house and seeing two men asked, 'Brother, have you come to rob me? They answered by attacking him. First he was struck on the head with a stick. Next he was knifed in the back; and then he was thrown down un the ground, held don, and secured. Then the room n wont int his wife's room, one leing armed with a rylver. They ro ed the house of all its ;ortable contents, including $100 A neighbour hearing the noise chased one of the prisoners who fired wo po nt-blank revolv r shots at him be'ore being secured.
Evidence having been led, the jury found the prisoners guilty.
I

His cheerful optimism as to the mons by which this great change is to be accomplished certainly struck me with a certain amount of doubt. If the whole thing can be so easily done as he says it can. I think the commit eo of the Chamber of Commerce are well able to find out how it can be Mr Playfair began by saying that ho was sick of silver. Having told the story of the crime, which has been published during the magenterial investiga- tion, Sir Henry commented in a com- plimentay way upon the courageous con duct of Miss Hannah Moore, who attacked one of the robbers, and held him by the cue for a time.
