A Gorgeous Spectacle. Calcutta, January 20,- The Century Ball at Governinent House which has been the subject of so much interest and discussion took place to-night and was a great success, Back from the bustling bridge playing, ping- pong-loving, hurrying, twentieth century it carried one to the sweet tender world of a hundred years ago. Tossing curls and laugh- ing eyes, daintily gowned women in classic empire style or in the quaint stiffer English fashion of the same period, courtly men, the glitter and glamour, the music and the witchery, the stately rooins and sumptuous decorations, such are the memories one will keep with one of the Century Ball, it was a splendid spectacle. Lord Kitchener was in the red and gold laced General's uniform of Sir Arthur Wellesley, and his Staff were in uniform worn by the corresponding officers of Lord Wellesley's household. The Officers of the 93rd Highlanders stationed here were in the uni form worn in this famous Corps a hundred years ago and the same applies to most of the other military and civil officials. non-officials appeared in long while sober coats with brass buttons, fancy waistcoats and light coloured stockings and knee-breeches exactly as they were worn at the famous ball in the same build- ing given by Lord Wellesley in 1802 in honour of the Peace of Amiens, The Viceregal House party included Mrs and Miss Leiter, the Hon. F. Curzon, Lord Bicho, Viscount Errington, Lady Dickson.

TO PREVENT CROUP,
BEGIN in time. The first symptom is
hoarseness, this is soon followed by a peculiar rough cough, which is easily recog nized and will never be forgotten by one who has heard it. The time to act is when the child first becomes hoarse If Cham- berlain's Cough Remedy is freely given, all tendency to croup will soon disappear. Even after the croupy cough has developed, it will prevent the attack. There is no danger in given this remedy as it contains nothing injurious. It always cures and cures quickly. Woodside FARM. By Mrs W. K. Clifford. London: Duckworth & Co. 1902. (Forwarded by Messrs Kelly and Walsh)..
In serial form and in America it was published an 'Margaret Vincent.'. This heroine is worthy of having her name on the title page.
She combines the high breeding of Britain's best nobility with the rubstantial goodness of the Surrey yeoman. the Survey map,
Mr Morgan Phillips (instructed by: Mr Brutton), was for the appellant; and Mr Pollock, K. C.. (instructed by Mr Goldring) uphold the case of the respondents.
The appellant's case way that the Wongs were tenants of the Ng family, of which the appellant, Ng Zik Shan, was trustee, That was common ground, and it was also common ground between the parties that the Wongs had been tenants under the Nga for many years. But the Wongs alleged that they held under a perpetual lease dated 1801. This the appellant alleged was a forgery, the real lase Recording to his caso being that the lease was a thirty years one which expired in 1896. Two of the names in the lease of 1801 were those of people then dead and the other two were named of people not born at the time. It was also alleged that the forger gave himself away by practically copying the terms of the genuine instrument. The appellant's title as superior landlord was not disputed, and was supported by a red deed, dated 1879, which was a new deed issued to replace an older deed, then in a decayed condition.
Mr Morgan Phillips was proceeding to A recite his case, when
Mr Justice Wise remarked, I have been all through it; and this is merely a waste of time.
Mr Morgan Phillips-I am sorry to hear that. We are not claiming the whole of C.C. The Chief Justice-What is the exact claim?

When men listen to God and receive His Word to operate in their lives, they begin to live a new life. They have new motives, new purposes, new habits, new ideal.

Many ron stand aside and declare it is too simple and no- thing can come of it. But both Old and New Testaments are at one in affirming the truth of it. *If thou shalt confess with thy mouth Jesus as Lord, and shalt believe in thy heart that God raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.' This course was agreed upon.
Mr Justice Wise-You are not claiming it, to-day?
The Chief Justice-Including the part taken by the Government?
Mr Morgan Phillips-Yes. The Red Deed covers the whole of A.X.
The Chief Justice-But the Government
does not allow that.
Mr Morgan Phillips-The Wong family, in whose favour the Land Court has decid-
od, set up a title under a perpetual lease from the Ng family, dated 1801, and we say that that lease is a forgery.
The Chief Justice recited the terms of the written reasons why the Land Court had decided against the appollant, and which were, in fine, that the Wongs ap- peared to have been in possession prior to the commencing dato of the alleged thirty years' lease, and after its termination.
Mr Justice Wise-They find that tho Wongs were in possession prior to 1866, and that, Mr Morgan Phillips, is a very strong point.
Mr Morgan Phillips-But we have no proof that they were in possession, whilst we can prove that of four of the people whose names appear on their lease, two were dead and the other two, at the time of the execution of the deed, were not yet
born.
Mr Justice Wise The Land Court was Batisfied that the Wongs were in possession before 1866
The Chief Justico said he was strongly of opinion that at least one half of the deeds executed by Chinese were what would be called in our courts, forgeries. When the old lease, written on fine paper, became worn out and disreputable, then they re-wr. te what they believed, perhaps, to be the terms of the destroyed document. He knew of cases in which there were no less than four leases all proving different people to be entitled to the same claim. That was absurd, of course. The Land Court considered those cases very carefully, and it would take a good deal of testi. mony to upset their decisions, considering the enormous experience they had.
Mr Justice Wise-If the Wongs were in possession, that knocks your case on the head. Mr Phillips, whether their lenso be a forgery or not.
Mr Morgan Phillips-Yat it is a curious fact that the lessce in both leases is Wong Hop Li. I suppose it was the witness who was committed for perjury who suid they were in possession since 1801.
