A Shanghai contemporary complains because it took a letter twelve days to reach Shanghai from Nagasaki.
The New York Maritime Register of the 24th of Decembor reports that the biggest iceberg on record was seen off the Horn on the 20th of September last by the British ship Anglesey, from Nowcastlo to San Francisco. It was approximately 100 miles long and 400 feet high.

It is telegraphed from Amsterdam that the strike of railway employees there is general. The trains have ceased running.
Two fires accurred on Saturday in the Colony. By the first, damage to the extent
of about 3200 was done at a Soy factory, 371, Queen's Road Central; and the second caused at 10 Mercer Street by the care- AY; of Members of Hong. leseness of a boy, was extinguished by the kong Rifle Association at the Hong-police before much harm was done. Kong Hotel.

Admiral Keppel's Jewels.
The boy who stole Admiral Keppel's jewels was tried at Johore and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment, whilst the tukang ayer, cook, and another boy who
| were charged with siding and abetting the theft, were sent to gaol for three months each.
The Loss of the ‘Elingamite."
The Court of Inquiry into the wreck of the Elingumite off the coast of Now Zealand finds the accident was due to the Captain having maintained full speed through the fog without taking soundings, The Court adds that the boats were not
properly equipped.
