A Suggestion from Singapore. The following letter appears in the Singa- pore Free Press

SIR-The opinion is gaining that this problem is not to be solved by any such coup as was effected by the Governments- of India, of Japan, and (quite recently) of Siam. Even if we admit the success of these experiments, not one of these count- ries is a fair precedent for the Straits Settlements, whose circumstances are in many respects unique. Hongkong is the nearest analogus; and Hongkong finds itself compelled to follow the fortunes of silver

Loud as is the cry for a fixed dollar and many the arguments in favour of ata bility of exchange, our Government will do welp to hesitate before incurring any responsi bility for the required conversion. It has dono immense service in the past by pro viding for the supply of a dollar of guaranteed weight and fineness, and s corresponding note issue. But Govern- ment is free of all responsibility for the gold value of these coins and notes. To

hardly fail to cause serious dislocation of trade if not social disturbance.

Taking everything in consideration, it would appear advisable, if not necessary, to leave the dollar alone, at any rate for tho presont.

On the other hand there seems no reason why we in the Straits Settlements should not work steadily towards the establish- ment of a gold standard with its attendant advantages. The first step should be the passing of an Ordinance making the British pound legal tender concurrently with the ailver dollar and exchangeable therewith at current rate of the day. Such currencies of this kind are to be found in other places. Thus in Shanghai you can pay a bill in dollars or in taels.

If owing to a rise in the price of silver, or for any other cause, the cry for a gold standard ceased-as it has ceased before- the Ordinance might remain a dead, letter without affecting the situation one way or another. But if the desire for a gold stan dard were genuine we might look for some of the following results amongst others.

The European companies would convert their stock into sterling and pay their dividend in sterling, thereby securing that groat desideratum, the attraction of Eur- openn, capital. Salaries both mercantile and official would be fixed in sterling. Importers of European goods would sell

Considering the suddenness with which ho was called upon to fill the place of the lecturer, Dr Thomson accquitted himself most creditably, and was able to lay before the audience a large number of interesting facts, setting them forth in clear concise language. As you will have observed, the premium for the insurance risk carried by the Company is now passed direct to the credit of the Depreciation and Insurance Fund instead of being treated as an available profit, and with regard to our investments, I can only say that they remain in the usual sound and satisfactory condition, the shares standing well within their market value and the mortgages showing an ampla margin on the sum advanced.

on the surface of the earth—in the soil, iŋ water, and at considerable depths in the ocean. They are present in the air, especially in regions of habitation. Any thing which tends to raise dust increases the number of bacteria in the air, and the dust and emanations from wearing apparel of people in a close room fill the air with bacteria in great numbers. Manure heaps, dead bodies, decaying trees, and all sorts of filth are filled with them. It is in such places that they find their best nourish ment. The bodies of man and animals contain them in great numbers on the surface of the body, no matter how clean this may be, they cling in great quantity. In the clothes, under finger nails, amongst the hair, and in every crevice or hiding place in the skin do they occur. It should be remembered, however, that though they were found in the mouth and in the alimentary canal, they were not found in the tissues of a healthy individual, blood, | muscles, glands, &c. In short, wherever was a lodging place for dust, they would find micro-organisme. In most places they lie dormant, but as soon as they find a suitable place and get the requisite food their potential powers of multiplication were called into activity. Dr Hunter's notes referred to the changes produced in Nature and on food stuffs by bacteria, and briefly touched upon their uses in the arts by producing chemical changes in animal and vegetable substances. Hardly an animal or vegetable substance is able to resist their softening influence. and
