In the year 1885, I was stationed in Amoy, where the following curious coin- cidence took place. At the corner of the Bund, on the Amoy side, was the ship- chandler's store known as Gerard and Co. It was kept by a German named Kopp at the time I am speaking of. It was the usual ship-chandler's store, from a box of matches to an iconclad for sale, including ladies tuillinery. As we got a quantity of light-

Hongkong, 3rd February, 1903. ment. Well, one morning I went into the store, and Mr Kopp told me of a very sin gular occurrence that had taken place the day before.

He said, pointing to an open flat case containing reels of cotton and silk. Yester day, I was sitting in the front of the shop talking to four or five men and officers be- longing to the wrecking schooner, who were sneaking as usual, when suddenly a reel of thread jumped out of that case on to the floor and began bobbing up and dowu violently, as if it were electrified or had something alive in it. It remained at an angle of some 45 degrees. We all sprang up and watched it. It went towards the door, and made an extra violent jump over the door sill and into the road, and across to some reclaimed ground in front of the house.'

Mr Kopp continued, and said: It was still hobbing up and down when I put my foot on it. and it remained quiet. I picked it up, and we all examined it closely. It was an ordinary rest of black thread, and had been in the case for some years, as far as I know. During the afternoon, I sent the reel to the electrician of the Telegraph Co. at Kulangsu to see if he could explain it.. He returned it and said he could not see anything particular in it--it just appear ed to be an ordinary real of cotton or thrend.'

I thought no more about the matter till about a week after, when we had a furious typhoon. The roof of my house was blown of, and the wrecking schooner, which had been anchored outside the Coker Reef, at the entrance of Amoy Harbour, was smashed up during the night. Not one living soul on board escaped, except the dog, which swam ashore.

When I went into Kopp's store the next day, he said: What & singular coincid. ence! Every one of those men who were with me the other day when that cotton reel jumped out of the box was drowned last night. I hope I shall not be the next to go.'

A week after this, a notice came round:

AUDITORS.

FORM AT THE VALLEY,

These fine, crisp, mornings at Happy Valley, as we near the wished for race days, give a fairly reliable forecast of the form which may be expected when the items on the triple card are being disposed of. A continuance of the 'cauld blast' may harden the turf more than owners of tender-hoofed animals may like, but it should not upset calculation made on the spot, within the past week or so, although modification may be necessary. This morn- ing the sod was in good trim, and it will, most likely,, keep in condition.

The trials have been very carefully watched by those who take more than a passing interest in the sport promised; and, although betting lists are still light, and the majority of the sweeps undrawn, it is high time to start sorting out the wheat from the claff.

ARRIVAL OF WARSHIPS. We have not remained long without Men-of-war, for on Saturday, January 24th, two German warships entered the harbour, H.I.G.M. S.S. Furst Bismarck and Hertha, and they are still hero. of the Church bell, when it is rung for service, on Sundays and Wednesdays. He is a very affable and progressive Mandarin, and very friendly with all foreigners.

NEW STAMPS. ;-

I notice, by the way, that Singapore and the Straits Settlements have for some time been using the King's Head on their stamps, and I am wondering how long Hongkong and British Post Offices in China are to continue using the old stanips with the Queen's head on them. It is surely no disrespect to Her late Majesty to suggest that, now she has been dead two full years, it is about time we were supplied with stamps with our present Mouarch, so as to be in line with the rest of the British Empire. Is the Hongkong Post Office so hopelessly behind the time as still to be lingering in last century?

ACCESSION ON KING EDWARD VII.

Thursday, January 22nd, anniversary of the accession to the throne of our gracious King Edward VII, who has now reigned two full years, with credit to himself, and the respect of the nation. His coronation safely over, he is evidently seeking to make, what must inevitably be a short reign, as honourable as it can be, God Save our King!

THE GREAT ZAMONI!

Wo have just been favoured with a visit from the 'Premier Modern Conjuror, Ventriloquist, Musician and Mimic,' the Great Zamoni, who stayed two nights in Amoy, on his way north. This incompar- able predestigateur gave his mystifying entertainment in the Amoy Club Theatre on Kulongsu on Monday and Tuesday evenings, Jan. 26 and 27, and he had good audiences on both nights. As I be- lieve you have had him in Hongkong it is quite unnecessary for me to describe his oddities. Suffice it to say that his clever sleight of hand is up to the level of other past-masters of the art of mystification, and his performances are well worth a visit.

I regret that, so far as the Derby is con- cerned, this seems a comparatively easy task, My judgment may be knocked to pieces, but, at the present moment, I think the places will be filled by a trio picked from the following four, Legacy, Finella, Sequah and Chee Sai, and it is not at all unlikely that they will catch the eye of the Judge in the order named. A WONDERFUL DISCOVERY. This is theage of research and experiment, whea all nature, go to speak, is ransacked by the scientife for the comfort and happiness of mat, Science has indeed made giant strides during the past century, and among the-by no means least important discoveries in medicine comes that of Therapion, particulars of which will be found in another columu. This preparation is unquestionably one of the most genuine and reliable Patent Medicines everintroduced, and has, we understand, been used in the Continental Hospitals by Ricord, Rostan, Jobert, Velpeau, Maisonneuve, the well-known Chassalguac, and indeed-by all those who are regarded as authorities in such matters, including the celebrated Lallemand, and Roux, by whom it was some time since uniformly adopted, and that It is worthy the attention ofthose whorequiresuch a remedy we think there is no doubt. From the time of Aristotle downwards, a potent agent in the removal of these diseases has (like the famed phi- losopher's stone) been the object of search of some hopeful, generous minds; and far beyond the mere power-if such could ever have been discovered-of transmutlug the baser metals into gold is surely the discovery of a remedy so potent as to replenish the failing energies of the confirmed rond in the one case, and in the other so effectually, speedily and safely to expel from the system without the aid, or even the knowledge, of a second party, the poisons of acquired or inherited disease in all their protean forms as to leave no taint or trace behind. Such is The New French Remedy Therapion, which may certainly rank with, if not take precedence of, many of the discoveries of our day, about which no little ostentation and noise have been made. and theextensive and ever-increasing demand that has been created for this medicine wherever intra- duced appears to prove that it is destined to cast into oblivion all those questionable remedies that were formerly the sole rellance of medical ment. Therapion may be obtained in England,, direct from the proprietor, and of the principal Chemists aud Merchants throughout the Colonies, India, China, Japan, &c., not even excluding such remote. stess Central Africa, the Fiji Islands, St. Helena,&C.-DiamondFields Advertiser KIMBERLEY
