than any stone which has fallen in England since 1795. A lapse of twenty- one years also represents the time sitice any meteorite has descended on the soil of Britain, and in Ireland itself no such viši tant has been recorded for thirty-seven years. A Mr Wailer, on whose farm the meteorito fell, says that the stone was hot when it landed, and felt hot for at least an hour thereafter. The fall occured about 10.30a.m. It was accompanied by a noise compared to the bursting of a boiler. A cloud of dust showed whero the stone had entered the ground, and by aid of a spado the meteorite was extracted from a depth of a foot and a half. A sulphurous odor was perceived in the near vicinity of the. stone, and the noise made by the detona- tion, it is asserted, was heard at Lurgan, Antrim, Lisburn and Legonigl. The great. est distance was that of Lurgau, which is situated thirteen miles front Crosshill.

These fragments from the sky which reach our earth represent only a remnant of the
such visitants that career many through the heavens, especially at certain periods of the years. Every one knows the shooting stars,' as they are called. They shoot athwart the heavens, glowing with light engendered by the heat which results from the friction caused by their rapid passage through the air, Most of them are burned out long before they have
chance of reaching the earth's surface. When the mass of a meteoric lasts. out the friction, so to speak, it reaches the earth. We have inany specimens of such stones in our museums. Some of them are. of large size, The Crumlin stone weighs 9 pounds 6 ounces. It measures 7 inches in length by 6 inches in width, and 3 inches in thickness. It is covered with what Mr Fletcher calls the char- acteristic crust that form on such bodies during their passage through the air. The likeness of chemical composition of 'me- teorites with our own world'y substances is cluse, but it is noted that in the Irish stone there exists troilite, a protosulphide of iron which is not included in the products of our planet. Astronomical science pos- tulates the evolution of all planets from a common origin and the composition of meteorites support this view. If the sun's hent is the product of blazing hydrogen gas-the gas used to inflate ballons, and forming one of the two gases whereof water common is composed and if other chemical olements (iron included) are found to form part of the celestial orbs, the idea that all the planets have been developed. from a common basis must certainly re-

It is therefore nearing us to the extent of one and a quarter millions of miles in a day. Little is you known concerning the new comet, but that it will greatly increase
in brightness is certain. Its direction of
motion is towards the north-west.
On an average about four comets are seen annually visible to the naked eye, but
a really fine comet with a tail of 40 or 60 degrees is a rarity.
