NIGHT CARS,

·

In connection with the visit of the Duke and Duchess of Connaught to Peshawar, an interesting episode is related. On hearing that no British troops were to take part in the arrival reception owing to its being Sunday, over 300 of the Queen's, who had previously, served under His Royal Highness, carnestly requested permission. to constitute the Guard of Honour and the request was granted.

Sir George Luck.

Allahabad, January 13.-Sir Georgy `Luck underwent an operation for abscess of the liver at St. Leonard's on the 20th December, and for the following two or three days his condition gave rise to grave

hus anxiety. But there

been SOD10 improvement by the time the tail left and it is hoped now that the seat of the mischiet has been reached and that his recovery will be speedy and complete.

Colonel Dane.

at

Delhi, January 10.I regret to hear that Colonel Dane, I.M.S., is dangerously ill. His brother Mr Dane Foreign Secretary, leaves to-night to join him at Karachi, Chinese Labour in South Afries, London, January 14. Ir Chamberlain yesterday visited the mines and conferred with

mining representatives Johannesburg. Speaking at the Chamber of Mines on the labour question, he dwelt on the difficulties and disadvantages of im• porting labour rom north of the Zambesi or India and China. He instanced the danger of introducing the sleeping sicknessTM from Uganda. While accepting Ch nese labouras a possible alternative, he raised the question whether a sufficient supply were available.

Jan. 15. The newspapers unanimously protest against the suggested importation of Chinese into the Rand, some condemn ing the proposal outright and others or pressing serious misgivings and urging that recourse to Asiatic labour should only bo ng a last resort. The opinion is largely expressed that the fact that the mines have not given more extensive employment lo whites is a conclusive trial.

The Ninth Lancers. Allahabad, January 13.-Referring to the cheering the Ninth Lancers receiv dat Delhi the Pioneer says: There can be no shadow of doubt as to the meaning of the demonstration. It was an expression of public sympathy for the gallant regiment under the shadow of injustice, that we hope may still be lifted. There were those in the Camp who hold that the cheers .00 Thursday last were directed against the Viceroy personally, and coming as they did from a gathering composed mainly of officers and visi tors of distinction from home, many of whom were the guests of Lord and Lady Curzon, they were bad form. The ethics of so delicate a subject may be left to the philosophical critic who strives to analyse public opinion and usually fails, owing to the exceptional phases of human patare, but this we say with absolute conviction that if the Viceroy through any accident had not been at the parade there would still have been the same display of feeling that love of fair play obtains among English. men all the world over, and it is this in- stinct which has been and is now working upon the public mind both in India and a home. Let the Government publish all the papers on the case without any reserva tion and then the public will form its judg ment and be satisfied. If this course does not recommend itself, the alternative is open of submitting the papers to the im- partial consideration of men accustomed to weigh evidence, say three selected judges of our High Courts.
