BUCKSTONE IN CHINA.
We find the following letter in the Pink Un of Dec. 20, just to hand. Perhaps some of our older readers may be able to add a little to these re- miniscences, as there are still one or two of our veteran racing men left. We shall gladly find room for any further old-time racing gossip in these columns. • O'Gee San' writes -
Dear Sir, I have seen a lot in Pink 'Un about Buckstone. Now, I remem- ber his third for the Derby, also his dendhent with Tim Wiffler, and I followed him to China, landing in A friend of mine Hongkong in 1865.

Investment died in the Bay of Biscay, Buckstong a few days after landing in Hongkong, whilo old Millionaire lived to win several races in Hongkong and Shanghai. Now, I believe Buckstone was the property of Jardines, heenuse Dents had Huddlingtou (Metropolitan, 1863), a black horse by Voltairo or The Sir Voltigeur at that time

They also had several Australians, one Birmingham, fairly good, but an Australian named Exeter was about the best in my time. He belonged to a'mun numed Cock, Jardine's jockey was a Mr Billy' Morgan, a Mon- mouthshire gentleman. The American house of Russell ́and Co. imported Derringer, an American. He was a
failure; but an old three-cornered horso called Tom Ochiltree paid his way. Dent's trainer was named Marsli, and Jardine's Mitchell, whose ac- quaintanco I made first Sunday I was in Shanghai, when calling to see Piff Paff (Horo, out of Georgiana), once the property of George Stovens, and whose i back I had beon on.
Last I saw or heard he was a loader in the E-Wo

Bad times came on China and the East generally, and horse-racing was dropped, Tartur ponies only being raced, and the sport. enjoyed by smaller men. Haddington, Derringer, and a horse from India belonging to the Apcars (I forget his name) were fellow-passengers on Great Republic to Japan, where I have remained ever since, they, all three, proceeding to California.

Mr Mumford thanked Sir William for his explanation. He did not at all object, he said, to the increasing of the sent rents;
Mr Cunningham pointed out that hitherto they had had two chaplains.

was imposed, any Chinese admitted in any State, under the provisions of the Chinese Restriction Act was, under section 92 of the Commonwealth Constitution, entitled to free intercourse with any part of Australia. He was glad of the opportunity of saying that, as one or two things had been done which were inconsistent with that view, but they were not done by the Commonwealth.
Mr Tart raised a question about applica tions regarding the readmission of Chinese previously domiciled in Australia, and Sir Edmund Barton requested the deputation to place this and any other points they desired to raise before him in writing.
The Chairman stated that the west point to be considered! was Mr Ward's agree. mont.
