Bovril has layed such a conspicuous part in South Africa that it formano in- considerable feature of the story. The
Lancet has had frequent references to Bovril in the reports of the officers of the Royal Army Medical Corps. Nearly every newspaper correspondent has had to refer to Bovril to make his story complete. Rudyard Kipling and Baden-Powell have Over 600 written their Bovril stories. British hospitals and similar public in stitutions use and prescribe Bovril, not beef tea, but Borril,
The reason is not far to seek. Bovril is a nournisher as well as a stimulant. It contains the albumen and fibrine, the sustaining properties of the beef. It is this fact, together with its absolute purity, that commends Bovril to physcians
and scientists, and proves in practice what it demonstrates in analysis.

Important Discoveries. The Jerusalem correspondent of The Standard writes:-The excavations at Tell-ej.Jesar, the site of ancient Gezer near Abou Chuche, near the road be two Jaffa and Jerusalem, which aring carried out by Mr R. A. S. Macinter on behalf of the Palestino Ex- ploration Fund, and were referred to in The Standard of October 28 last, have resulted since in a further important and interesting discovery in the shape of a temple built for the goddess Astarto, of * Queen Ashoreth, called by Jeremiah of Heaven' (chapter vil., 18, and xiv, 17-25). According to Mr. Macalister, the temple is from the time of the Amorites. and as Gezer was captured by Pharaoh and given to his daughter, Solomon's wife, sa a this is one of the temples built by Solomon for his foreign wives for the worship of their deities. Owing to the outbreak of cholera at Abou Chuche and the neighbour. ing villages, the excavation had to be temporarily suspendod. ⠀

Commenting upon this, our London cou temporary вnýя! Although the outbreak of cholera in the Jaffa district first serious- ly impeded, and has now arrested, Mr R. A. S. Macalister's excavations at Gezer, which we noticed in these columns a few weeks ago, he has been able, as our Jeru salem Correspondent informs us in a coun munication which we print olsewhere, to make some further important discoveries. The old Canaanite city of Gezer has been identified, it will be remembered, with an elongated hill now called Tell-ej-Jezar, of which only the Eastern half has been ex- cavated. It is obviously an old hill for- tress, generally similar to those whose ruin- ed remains are common in the more rocky districts of Britain, France, and other coun- tries of Europe. The walls are built of stones, often unhown, and never more than roughly hammer-dressed, and the on- closures at Gezer belong to more than one age. Tho rolics discovered in trenching the debris lay in fairly distinct layers, and á cave was found which had been used first for cremation and then for burial. Mr 119-Macalister inferred that the site of Gezer had been occupied by four successive

groups of inhabitants. The earliest was clearly a pre-Semitic people, members of that race, short in stature, with elongated skulls and swarthy complexions, which spread Westward over Europe, and in so doing displaced, perhaps exterminated, the folk called Paleolithic from their antiquity and rudely-chipped stone we- apons. The next comore probably re- presented the first wave of the Semitic race to which the others also belong- ed. Of the latter two, even the earlier must be very anciant, if we can trust, the evidence of Scarabs, for one was found which indicates inter-communication with Beypt not much less than four thousand years ago. But not the least interesting discovery was that of several rude upright blocks of stone, one of which was nearly these are sixteen feet high. Though frequent, in many parts of Britain and France, and both are fairly common in Eastern Palestine and neighbouring coun- tries, they are very rare West of the Jor- dan; the only other instance, if we re- member rightly, being the monoliths dis- covered by Dr Bliss at Tell-es-Saf. Mr Macalistera late excavations at Gezer. have been rewarded by further dis coveries, and among them are "remains assigned to a Temple of Ashtoreth. This identification, no doubt, is only provisional, and as that Goddess, in Palestine at least, was chiefly worshipped by the Sidonians, Gezor is hardly the place where. we should expect a temple in her honour. Of this, no doubt, we shall hear more from Mr Macalister, and an instalment of his Reports is expected to appear next month in the quarterly atatement of the Palestine Exploration Fund, which will contain addi tional evidence-in the form of many fresh and discoveries of pottery, carvings, other relics-that Gezer was inhabited before the Semitic race first long made its appearance in Palestine; in other words, centuries before the Ex- odas and not a little after the arrival of Abraham from Haram. The supposed Temple of Ashtoreth will probably prove to be earlier than the age of Solomon, and may turn out to be more nearly related to the prehistoric remains already mentioned than to the golden age of Israel. That, however, can only be settled when Mr. Macalister's reports arrive in this country, and they will probably be delayed, for the cholera has already seriously interfered with the transmission of documenta. ̈ ̄/
As, however, the worship of "standing stones did not cease in Palesting with the building of the Temple any more than it did in Europe with its nominal conversion to Christianity-there may be remains at Gezer, generally similar in character, of later as well as earlier date. Doubtless side by side with the Asherah or Groves, such stones were once common in Palcatine,
Perhaps they disappeared before the iconoclastic zeal of Hezekiah or Joaish, and those at Gezer and es-Safi may have escaps ed notice by being already deserted and partly buried under accumulated debris.

School, make a separate Report. I would beg leave, on behalf of masters and boys, to express our sense of the kindness and consideration shown by the examiners.
12. The examination of the Lower and Preparatory Schools was conducted by myself under Standing Orders from the Governing Body. The whole tone of the examination is higher than that of the previous year, the improvement being chiefly attributable to greater regularity in With the attendance as reported above. exception of the Grammar paper in the three sections of Class IV., there was ab- solutely none of the provoking practice of inserting silly or irrelevant information. No further comment upon the Summary and Table below is needed than the statement that the Lower School has distinguished itself by marked general improvement; and the Preparatory School, taught by Acting Pupil Teachers, under the charge of & Senior Pupil Teacher has maintained its usual high level. --
This being Prize Day at the Queen's College, the Hon. F. H. May responded to the cordial invitation of the Head Master, Dr G. H. Bateson Wright, to preside and distribute the certificates and mementocs of educational competitive sue cess, and in the course of fulfilling his promise, the Colonial Secretary delivered a highly interesting address. In addition to the College Staff and students, there were present: Mrs May, Lieut. Kitto, R.E. (one of the examiners), Lady Goodman and Miss Goodman, Dr Ho Kai, C.M.G. . Archdeacon Banister, Rev. G. A. Bunbury,
M.A., Rev. W. Southam, Rev. C. Hick-Preparatory School ling, Mrs Bateson Wight, Professor Sharp, Mr E. A. Irving, Mr A. G. Romano, Por- tuguese Consul-General; and Mr Georgo Piercy, and Mr H. Sykes, Diocesan School. Mr and Mrs May were welcomed at the principal entrance by the Headmaster,. by whom they were escorted to the platform.

THE HEADMASTER'S REPORT,
Which, was as follows :
Queen's College, 19th January, 1903.
Colonial C.M.G., Hon. F. H. May,
Secretary, SIR, I have the honour to prosent the Annual Report on Queen's College for the year 1902.
2. The total number on the Roll was 1434, a slightly lower figure than in the previous your. This reduction is one of many indications of considerable improve ment in Attendance; for with fewer boys and with seven school-days loss there is actually an increase of 16,862 attendances in the course of the year. Again, the num- ber on Roll exceoded 1000 in nine months and 1100 in four; while the average daily attendance is 990. When it is remembered that in the summer, plague, cholera, and dengue fever wore prevalent, it must be admitted that a steady attendance under these conditions is highly commendable...
3. The fees were short of $30,0 0 by only $121. The cost of the College is en. hanced by the fact that the fees of Free scho, lars are not credited to this Department, though $216 is the annual cost of educating Student Interpreters for the Registrar General's Department, and $180 for the. charitable education of children of Public Servants, which does not include the four Free Scholarships granted annually to en- courage education in the Government Dis trict Schools of Saiyingpun, Wantesi, &o.. &c. It appears to me that this last is. the only item fairly chargeable to Educa tion; the cost of the other two itoms should, if possible, be defrayed elsewhere
as a matter of Account.

4. It is just five years since the services of Mr J. W. Junes were first loaned to the Supreme Court for twelvemonths. It was, therefore, quite as much a metter of con- gratulation to the College as to Mr Jones, when in October last, the news of his per manent transfer to be Deputy Registrar as from 7th June 1901, reached the Colony. No surprise can be excited at the decision of the Secretary of State that in the future Educational Officera are not to hold acting appointments in other departinents. vonture, however, to expresa hope that this does not moan an absolute negation of the

From recent experiences kong, he, for one, and, he was sure, the other guests who sat on or under the platform, felt much happier in being under was well a roof which they could se0 supported than they would be under one which might be under the least taint of beon good enough suspicion (hear, hear). The re- regular bult of the better and more attendance was shown in Dr Wright's re- port when he said that the quality of the work done in the lower and preparatory grades showed a marked improvement upon that of the previous year. The report of the independent examiners was distinctly good. They said the boys at the head of the school had shown some really excellent work. They remarked that when it was taken into account that the work done by Chinese boys was accomplished in English, to them a foreign language, the results could only be regarded as extremely satisfactory (tp- planse). But, the examiners regretted that boys who could do so well in English should be, with one or two exceptions, so weak in the knowledge of their own written language. Dr. Wright had referred to the Commission which enquired last year into education, generally, in the Colony, and he had no doubt that the Headmaster
