BOVRIL ISN'T DEAR,

Pin fact, value for value, it is uno of the cheapest drinks and one of the most. economical foods that can be obtained. A cup of hot Bovril costs less than a drink of whisky, and while giving a more genuine and lasting warmth than the latter, contains, in addition, the nutritive prin- ciples of beef worth many times its cost.

Old fashioned beef teas and meat ex- tracts, whether known as such, or disguised under more pretentious modera names contain none of the NUTRITIVE .pro- perties of beef. Baron Licbig himself

adinitted this fact; there is nor a doctor to. day disputes it. Used as a nourishment. Meat Extract is probably the most ex pensive article one can buy. Bovril one of the cheapest.

When a European skipper gets ticket taken away for anything disgraceful as happened in this case, he is a marked man. The native, unknown, with his name unsullied as far as Europeans are concerned, and therefore unblamed, pitied by his contemned, will probably easily get employment and shine as immaculate as did the convicted murderer who duly served his term of imprisonment, was employed in this office as a tamby, and left it to be- come a brilliant and respected member of the dotective force!

British Association to meet in Zambesia.

The British Association has accepted the invitation of the Chartered Company to hold its annual mesting in 1905 at Victoria Falls, on the Zambesi river.

The arrangements for the reception of the members are already in progress, as the authorities in Rhodesia havo decided to offer the fullest measure of hospitality to the visitors. No less than £7,000 is to be Bot aside to defray the expenses of the acientists from London and back and for their entertainment while in South Africa.

A saloon train will convey them fron Capetown to their destination, and a stop will be made at all places of interest near the railway. A fine hotel to be erected at the Falls will accommodate the travellers during their stay.

The Victoria Falls of the Zambesi River are about 200 miles from Bulawayo. They are very wonderful sight, as, unlike Niagara, the general level of the country is the same both above and below the cata- racts, the water disappearing into a great fissure or canon. The cleft in the plain is from 100ft. to 400ft. wide, and the depth is variously estimated at from 250ft. "to 400ft.

This is the first time the British Associa- tion have gone so far afield for their an- nual gathering. been confined to Great Britain and Ireland,

Previous meetings have

with the exception of one held in Montreal. Some difficulty is likely to arise in report- ing the proceedings of the association in such a far distant spot, and students of science will miss the lengthy and interest- ing discussions which English journals are accustomed to print.

The return journey from London to Bula- wayo cannot be undertaken for much less than £100. By 1905 the railway will have reached Victoria Falls, and the cest of the journoy from Bulawayo there and back would be at least another £10. The cost, therefore, cannot be borne by the modest devotee of science. The Chartered guests will probably be confined to Fellows of the Royal Society and a few other scientific luminaries, the appropriation of £7,000 being inadequate to meet the expense of all the members of the British Association, who nuinber thousands. —Daily Express.

A cold cances a more abundant secretion of mucus. and when the lungs and bronchial tubes are inflamed, they are extremely sensitive to the irritation. Unless care is taken, the cold may result in pneumonia, which is swift and deadly. If the cold is a lingering one, the more leisurely but equally fatal consumption may set in. Hongkong Tidęs. The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanso Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an an. tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table is Low Water Or: dinary Spring Tides, which has been found

to be 2 feet below inean sea Jovol.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gaugecat Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9. to the height given lu the table.
