The London correspondent of the Daily

THE CHINA MAIL.

News of December 30th states that the BRITISH AMERICAN TOBACCO

procession into Delhi created an immens◊

impression in England.

With the exception of the Daily News, which decried the Durbar, the British Press was sympathetic and appreciative in its comments. The Times pays a notable tribute to the administrative officers who, it says, if not the most conspicuous per. Bonages in yesterday's pageant, are men to whom in the largest measure the prosperity of India is due.

January 2.-The proclamation of the King at the Delhi Durbar yesterday is des eribed as a spectacle long to burome:nbered in the annals of the Indian Empire. There was a brilliant gathering of Princes, Chiefs and representatives of the peoples of India. The Viceroy's speech was finely attuned to the solemnity of the occasion.

Among the concession announceds by the Viceroy were the remission of interest for three years on loans by the Government of Indis to the Nativo States in connection with the last famine. Other concessions were also promised.

The Viceroy's speech was followed by the presentation of Native Chiefs who offered congratulations.

At noon yesterday the Sherid' of Calcutta read the King's Proclamation from the: steps of the Town Hall,

Last evening the State Dinner was given by the Viceroy at Delhi, at which wera present the Duke of Connaught, the Grand' Duke of Hesse, the Duke of Marlborough, the Duke of Portland, the Earls of Pembroke, Jersey, Lonadale, Durham, Dartley and Crewe, and Lord Wolverton and Lord Killanin.

Hongkong Tides. The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office In London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an at- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table is Low Water Or. dinary Spring Tides, which has been found to be 2 feet below me in sea level..

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 In., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height given in the table.
