Reviewing Randon Raminiscences' by. Charles H. E. Brookfield (Edward Arnold (London), The Standard says ;—
There is no need to enlarge on the loss which the Stage suffered when Mr Charles Brookfield retired owing to failure of health. But the volume of Reminiscences asued the other day is only partially the fruit of his theatrical experiences. The son of an English Canon, educated at Westminster and Trinity, Cambridge, he was originally intended for the Bar, and kept some terms at the Inner Temple. Thus ho had already a large cirolo of friends and acquaintances wholly uncon- nected with the Stage before he set foot
upon it; and, compared with what we might expect from the pan of a successful actor, there is little greon-room gossip or professional anneerlote to be found in his page. In fact, his most amusing storios and not those which cone frem h » diamatic répertoire. It was in 1879 that he finally made up his mind to become an actor, and appeared for the first time with Kelly's company at the Alexandra Palace, for which he received ten shillings.

The company was not generally made up of a very refined class of actors :-
! I remember one day, at a rehearsal of the Merchant of Venice, the Bassanio ad- vanced at the end of his Casket scene with outstretched arms, prepared, according to the stage directions, to embrace the Lady of Belmont, Poor Miss Terry started back with a look of terror; then, recovering her- self said with great presence of mind: No, Mr Sykes, we don't do that business; you-or-you merely kiss my hand. It's more Venetian." "Oh, come, Miss Terry," expostulated Mr Sykes, with an engaging lder. you're cuttin'all the fat' out of my part."
It is probable that Mr Brookfield would not see so m'ch of this kind of thing in the touring company of to-day. But the follow- ing description may still, we fear, have only too much truth in it:-

Of the non-theatrical stories the best,
COMPANY, LIMITED,

w Chink, is the one about Lord Hardwicke VER
and the London tailor. When Hard Hard- wicke was Master of the Buckhounds, a well-known sporting tailor used to hunt with them : ail on me orcasión ha cum- plained to Lord Hardwicko that the Hunt was not what it was; that it was getting terribly mixed.' Well you know, said Lord Hardwick, you cannot expect them all to be tailors. The man who could say this must have said a great many more good things. though it was never generally known that Lord Hardwicke was a wit.
Mr Brookfield's father was intimate with Tennyson, Hallam, Carlyle, Thackeray, Dickens, and other iterary celebrities. He was dining one night, at the Oxford and Cambridge Club, with a party of which Tennyson was one :—
After dinner the poet insisted on put ting his feet on the table, tilting back his chair more Americano. There were strang- ers in the room, and he was expostulated with for his uncouthness, but in vain. "Do put down your feet!" pleaded his host. Why should I?" retorted Tonny-
son.
I'm very comfortable as I am,' "Everyone's staring at you," said another. "Let 'em stare," replied the poot placidly. “Alfred,” said my father, "people will think you'ro Longfellow," Down went the feet.'
He onco brought Thackeray home to dinner unexpectedly, when there was no- thing in the house bat a cold shoulder of mutton. It was too late to arrange any- thing else, so Mrs Brookfield sent out to a neighbouring pastrycook's for a dozen tart- lets of various kinds. Which of these may I give you,' she said to Thackeray? Thank you, Mrs Brookfield,' said he, 'I'll have a twopenny one.” Brookfield's great grandfather was a clergyman-a Mr Pre- ston. He once rebuked a younger man for preaching too long a sermon.
'But you know. Mr Preston,' was the answer, St. Faul preached till midnight.' 'Ay,' said the other, but folk fell down dead.” There are plenty more such stories where these came from. We have tried to pick out the best, but, as testes differ, we would adviso everyone to read the book for himself.

Hongkong Tides.
The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui durip the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table is Low Water Or- dinary Spring Tides, which has been found to be 2 feet below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height piven in the table.
