To bust it up at night!

Now Mr B.. I grieve to say,

Did this with all his might.

From 9 a.w, to 5 p.m.

He was an active broker; That is de nocte in noctem And then, de die in diem

He played at bridge and poker.

He sometimes lost, and sometimes won

And sometimes he was quits;

But always, ere the night was doue,

Had far too many

'splits,'

And wrote his signature upon

Innumerable chits

Now Mr B.'s example quite

Led poor Chow Long astray:

The pagan thought that all was right,

When Master led the way.

So, while the boss was drunk all night,

The boy was drunk all day.

And, as he wore his master's clothes,

His singlets, mainly, and his hose

Heaped has vices-chiefly those

For purposes of airing,

Of drinking, gambling, swearing:

But of his virtues (I suppose

B. could be virtuous when he chose)

His mimicry was sparing.

Tis written in the laws of Caste The slave is like his master.

If Mr Battledore was fast

His boy Chow Long was faster;

Until the bust-up' came at last,

The slow but sure disaster.

Time fails--and space-to tell the tale

Of this unlucky broker,

How he for mortal man is frail-

Became a hopeless soaker,

And, broke-with reason to bewail His love for bridge and poker: And how Chow Long, compelled to see

His old employ forsake him, Went forth to hunt, now he was free,

For other men to take him. Yet, and to say, the boy would be So frequently upon the spree,

Each boss was forced to

shake' him ;

And he was always on the seclz:

He rarely kept a place a week. Alas, if English he could speak, Ho'd say and 'twould be like his cheek: Your Boy is what you make him.' -Singapore Free Press.

BRILLIANT CAVALRY, WORK.

}

Major General Sir Locke Elliot's inter- tion was apparently to advance on both sides of the Delhi-Umballa Kailka Railway, which was from Kamal to Delhi on the south, but coming on a larger body of his Cavalry and guns to the east of the line at 8-30 a.m., the main body of General Sir Locke Elliot's First Cavalry Division left Barota, and were almost at once engaged with the enemy's gunsand Cavalry on the east of the railway line

General Little's Division then made a desperate attempt to capture the baggage of the Cavalry of the Notheru Arty, and in doing 80 he unfortunately delayed his retirement before a supuigr force.

SUCCESS OF THE 19TH BENGAL LANCERS.

General H. C. T. Littledale, 4th Dragoon Guards, commanding the Second Cavalry Brigade, noticing the Southern Com- mander's mistake, at one ordered the 19th Bengal Lancers, who had cautiously work-

ed forward on the west of the railway under well selected cover, to cross the line and check, if possible, the enemy's retire- ment. They made a bold dash for the crossing south of the Gharaunda Station and exactly complied with their Brigadier's orders, and so were able to beat in detail the various units as they retired in succes- sion under the widely separated enemy's, guns. The Gwalior Imperial Service Lancers and the Squadron of the Central India Horse were cach in turn put out of action by this vigorous and well-timed dash.

THE 15TH RU59ARS AMBUSCADED.

The success of the 19th Bengal · Laneoxs did not end here, for soon afterwards they took up a dismounted position on some hillocks under cover, and caught the 15th Hussars as the latter dashed past in column.

CAPTURE OF CENTRAL LITTLE.

Into this rapidly reliring mass the 19th Bongal Lancers poured a well directed and deadly enfilading fire for fully six minutes almost simultaneously, and whilst General Little and his Stall were endeavour. wg to escape by the road in the roas,

Hongkong Tides,

The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations takon by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table is Low Water Of dinary Spring Tides, which has been found to be 2 feet below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gange at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height | given in the table.
