Rotaliation and vengo anco are their great agents of moral contiol and prevents to a certain extent their interforing in matters which do not concerni themselves, besides becoming involved in law-suits, which, to him, simply means' purgatory.

THE WEATHER.
Any, December 20.
At last it seems as if we might get a little winter to brace us up after the long hot, summer, for since the spell of heavy rain of the previous week, it has really been quite cold. A few days of strong North-East winds brings down the tem- perature and makes a fire a comfort. 5.

PIRACY,
awhile since, I hear that the head of the Pirates has offered somé $6000 to buy off those who were caught and imprisoned, but that the mandarin in charge wants a much Iarger sum, while the Foreign Consuls have vigorously protested against such bribery and intend to hand in an even larger claim to the mandarins for a number of robberies committed by the Pirates of late. Truly money is a great power in Chin. where, and a bat top endly override the chains of justice !
In reference to the highwaymen in the North River district, the efforts of the mandarins have been partindly successful, and one man at least has been caught and
has already lost his head. A few others, not, however, of the actual band, but he longing to some of the villages near the lair of the robbers, have also been seized, and are being tried for complicity with their nefarious deeds. Several villages, 100, in that neighbourhood have suffered severely, as the mandaring cominded the soldiers to barn a number of houses in each village as a punishment and a wat ing. But, as is usual the main land of robbers has led and very little effort is he ing unde to get the men who are really at the head, However, for the time being, the roads and vivers are said to be safe for travelling, though it has yet to be seen for how long this immunity from danger will

Tommy, having been examined to test his accurate remembrance of the message, wont off with it. Mrs Balregan was con templating a piece of streaky bacon when Tom-ho knocked at the door. It was true that the had had plenty of time, as she told Jim For to buy another fowl; but she had not plenty of money. Most of her available cash had gone on a resplendent gold and diamond scarf-pin, a present to Jim. She had money in the savings-bank, but that was to be kept for a certain grant occasion We in which Jim was one of the interested parties. But she would have accepted Mrs Day's invitation, oven if twenty turkeys l'had been hanging in her larder.

Similarly Willie Balregan conveyed to his widow mother such astounding news as that Mr and Mrs Day had spent Saturday afternoon and evening at the Crystal Palace.

Another form of robbery that is far too common in China is kidnapping. Again and again one hears of parents bemeaning the loss of their young children - generally boys about four to six years of age. Efforts are made by pasting up notices in Chinese characters all over the town and by sending men round with a gong, like the town- criers at home, to acquaint everybody with the robbery, but seldom are these efforts of much use. Several times during this pre- sent year have I met men engaged in this sad errand. Latterly, too, quite a number of babies have been carried round in baskets for sale, mostly girls, but not a few boys also. Hongkong Tides.
The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table is Low Water Or- dinary Spring Tides, which has been found to be 2 feet below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7'in., ard on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height
given in the table.
