THE FREIGHT MARKET. HAPPY IS THE MAN
In their Freight Circular, datol 20th December, Messrs Exake and Rogge
• write
There has been but little doing in coast charters since Inst circular on the 6th inst. Freights, owing principally to the absence
of enquiries for prompt loading from the rice ports, are in a had state. Quite a number of handy-sized ready and nearby boats ate hard up for employment.
From Bangkok, exchange difficulties and other reasons have stopped business.
From the Yangtze ports, increased likin taxes appear to continue to be in the way of further charters.
From Saigon, a few boats have somehow secured business for this port, but at as low as 12 and 10 cents; the latter in the case of a boat originally fixed under a charter of 18 cents, lost through cancelling date having been missed Thore aro apparently no further offers to be had at For the Philippines a charter any rate.

Anent the new crop, the shipping will have to encounter vory dull six weeks or so if Saigon reports prove correct in making new grain available and fit to be shipped not before February. The estimate, that the crop will be 30% under the average, is also unsatisfactory, but as it has no pfficial statistics for its basis, there is certainly room yet for hopes for a better yield.
In the meantime the first fixtures for new crop's cargo have already come off, for as far forward as March loading. Several. steainers, responding to a demand for the voyage Saigon to Yokohama, have secured 40 cents, which scoms quite a full rate for larger size boats. More chartering is looked for for saune destination, and 'from other rice ports too.
The bulk of last fortnight's fixtures have been from Japan coal ports, at $2.00 and $2.50 from Moji to this, and at $3.00 from Kuchinotza to Singapore. Closing quota-
tions are slightly lower.
For Manila a boat closed at $4.00. There has been a charter done in London
since for same destination at $3.75.
'On 'time,' from some enquiries for March commencement, a settlement has resulted as per list overleaf.
Sail Tonnage:The Manuel Llagune has sailed for New York, leaving the berth to British 4.. bark Daylight. No further devand in that direction. Italian hark Lothair, arrived here from Callao, has fixed for another trip to that port, freight about 21/- per 50 cubic feet. Nothing elso is doing.
British bark Grostenor has been sold by auction at $9,000.

The same mail that brought this volume brought the nowspapers containing the obituary notices of Mr Henty. Educated at Westminster and Cambridge, when quite young ho served in the Crimean War, Though he left the military service soon after, he probably saw more actual fighting than any other Englishman of his day, for in the capacity of correspondent for The Standard he saw the war between Italy and Austria, the Garibaldi Campaign, the Abyssinian Expedition, the Franco-Russian War and Siege of Paris, the Ashanti Expedition, the Carlist Insurrection, and the Turco-Servian War. His first boys' book was produced in 1868, and since then no writer has pro duced so many books of equal merit, well calculated to beguilo the British boy, or to instil in him a spirit of robust patriotism and healthy emulation. Manly, honest and sincere in himself, Mr Honty had a natural and genuine sympathy with boys whom ho understood thoroughly-that is the verdict of an English journal, and alt who know Mr Henty's romances will en- dorse this verdict.
