read a paper bstore the members of the Royal Geographical Society, last month, on World-shaking Earthquakes,' or rather his paper was more accurately styled ⚫ Seismological Observations and Earth Physics. He said the chief object of his paper was to point out the character of the information dorived from earthquako investigations, which throw light upon the physical nature of the interior of the world, and the geomorphological changes in opera tion on or near the surface, The earth. quakes considered were divided intu two groups-firar, those which disturbed Continental areas, and frequently disturbed' the world as a whole; and, second, local earthquakes, which usually only dis turbed an aren of a few miles radius, and seldom extended over an area with s radius of 100 or 200 miles. The former class were the result of sudden accolerations in the process of rock-folding accompanied by faulting and molar displacements of con- siderable magnitude, while the latter were. for the most part, settlements and adjust

nents along the lines of their primary fractures. The relationship between the

2193-

two groups of earthquakes was, therefore, that of parents and children. The former would be referred to as macroseismic dis. turbances, or largo earthquakes, and the latter microseismic disturbances or small. earthquakes. With regard to the violent movements of a large earthquake, they gradually changed in character as thoy radiated, until at a certain distance from their origin, although they could not be felt, evidence of their existence still ro- mained. After the earthquake of Lisbon, in 1755. the motion of the water in in Eng. lakes and ponds observed 2062 land, Scandinavia, and North America,

GOOD HEALTH

implies freedom from physical pain and disorder. It means strength, energy, power; power to

think walk, work well, eat well, sleep well. It means being "fit," fit for home

duties, fit for business, fit for pleasure,

1 for everything. It means money-money saved

add money camed. Indigestion destroys good health. It multiplies worries, breeds disease and fills the doctor's purse. Mother Seigel's Syrup prevents indigestion and enres it. It cures in Nature's way, with Nature's remedies the healing juices of roots and herbs from field and forest. Its daily uso is a guarantee of good digestion, which is the foundation of good health, Saya, Mrs.

C. BARNDON, 46, Lydia Street, Brunswick, Victoria, Feb, 27th, 1902: "For two years I suffered martyrdom

from acute indigestion. I tried many different medicines, but got no relief until I took Mother Seigel's Syrup, three bottles of which com. pletely cured mo I can now sleep well, my appetite is good, and I can perform my duties with ease." Boware of imitations.

CANTON.

The Opening Services. (From Our Own Correspondent).

Canton, December 17.

This year will long he remembered in Canton for two events of first-rate and of present and far-reaching importance, both connected with medical work. The first' was the establishment by Dr Mary Fulton of a hospital for women and children, and the second, the natural adjunct of the first, was the opening of a Medical College for the training of Chinese women as doctors and nurses to their own people. That both these great projects have been carried out within a year is a splendid tribute to the genius, determination and perseverance of the gifted lady who presides over it all. She has received invaluable assistance from her brother, the Rev. A. A. Fulton, who hns at all times, been her adviser and holper,

The Hospital and Medical School are in the west-end of Canton, in To Po Tai Kai, and within easy reach of the best residen. tial part of the city. To-day, December 17, at 2 p.m., was fixed for the dedicatory services of the now Medical School, but
