This wall onclosus the City propor, to a width of about two miles with a circumference of about six. The suburbs spread along the River for nearly five miles. The entire circuit; including the suburbs, is nearly ten miles. What is called the New City was formerly known
the Southern Suburb. The Western Suburb stretches for miles along the River.
There are sixteen gates giving admission to the City, besides two water gates Or entrances by canals.

thing else I can think of, oach building boing merely a succession of swall coils running cross-wise under one roof In cach of these colls, a candidate for a degree is confined, under lock, while he is writing the work prescribed. Behind are a large.
residences of the different officials and their servants, and other people connected with the examinations. Thore are soven or eight thousand colls altogether, the whole occupying a very large area and surround- ea by a high wall. This we only had time to view in a general way from the City Wall.
A VIEW OF THE CITY. We then returned back over the East Gate and along the top of the walls, over the Little North Gate and Great North Gate, to what is called, by Europeans, the 'Five-Storied Pagoda a large barn-like building, with steep stairs leading from storey to storey, on the highest of which a magnificent view is obtainable for miles in overy direction, as the structure is crected on a hill-top. The city lies at our fect, stretching away with an easy declino to the
river, and its walls, pagodas, fortress pawn-
shops, &c., rising out of the sea of tiled roofs, invest it with an attractive appearance. In the distance is to be seen the French Roman Catholic Cathedral, a building. which is the feature of the picture, making no pretence to modesty in either size or design, being of Gothic architecture, with two lofty towers, surmounted with spires, and built entirely of dressed granite. It occupies the old site of the Governor's yamon. There is said to hang about this a story of political and religious intrigue and grab, worthy of Rome and the Faith- ful Daughter of the Church'! To the right, a stretch of level country, with clust- ers of trees in places, then the threading of a river, and beyond, in the distance, a range of hills. To the left the Canton Rivor, a little way off, looses itself in the hills which range up, till, just to the left and behind, we have the White Cloud Hills, thickly sprinkled over with graves, extend. Within recent years, they have been seen practicing with bows and arrows, but whether this is done now or not I am not able to veri- fy. Fine views of the White Cloud Hills. extending to the north and north-east of the city, were also had. Along the wall wero 19 fine a collection of antiquated muzzle-loading cannon, of all sizes and datos, as probably can be seen anywhere, old fellows, many of them, that had seen better days, bearing the marks that showed British-make and ownership, discarded and sold, another evidence of the bargaining ability of the Nation of Shopkeepers."

Canton is a perfect hive of industry', and everybody, old and young, seems to kare some occupation. It has been liken- ed to a huge fancy Bazaar, with its narrow passages for streets, and stalls in every Euch shop ivailable nook and corner.' has its little niche for the setting out of religious offerings and the burning of incense. FIRST DAY.-Wednesday, 10th Dec. 1902
Notwithstanding the dark, gloomy veil which in the shape of rain foreboding clouds overhung the harbour during the early forenoon, the Weather Clerk was not altogether unkind to the promoters and supporters of the Hongkong Regatta. When the Secretary's launch 'glided away from Blako Pier the sun was fighting his genial way through the atmospheric pall; when the launch drew up alongside the guily-dressed Daylight, bright sunshine was smiling down upon the expectant com- petitors and their friends. It was but a momentary flash of summery brilliance, however, the unwelcome black clouds out- witted the smiles of the sun, who was loth to be content with warding off the rain. The rain was kept away, and altogether the day's racing was highly enjoyable. The officials worked very hard and parti- cular credit is due to Mr F. W. White the Hon. Sec. of the V. R. C., Mr W. Hutton Potts the starter of the rowing races, and

DEPARTURE OF AMERICAN FLEET.
On the same day, the whole American fleet left us for Hongkong, after having stayed here some time. The outer harbour looks quite deserted now, for we had grown accustomed to the sight of tlie great variety of craft which made up the eight vessels lying in a long row outside. As the weather has been unusually warma and calm for the time of year, they will have a smooth passage South. CRICKET MATCH.
On Wednesday also, the return cricket match between the team of H.M.S. Goliath and the Amoy Cricket Club was played on the Tennis and Cricket Ground, but, for the second time, Amoy failed to win, though they were able to make it a draw this time. The visitors went in first, and though six wickets foll for 62 runs, the later-batsmen put on runs so quickly that the total grew to 166. Thacknell (60) and Scott (40) were the heroes of the day, but every member of the team but one helped the score. Amoy managed to get within one run of the previous week's total, viz.. 107, but for nine wickets only. The chief scores for Amoy were Milward (34), Wal. Ince (24), and Low (17).

IN COMMITTEE.
On the consideration of the Public
Health Bill in committee, a question was raised on the Sub-Section which provides for the prevention of overcrowding.
+
De Ho Kai suggested that no prosecution should be ordained until, say, three months after the proclamation of an overcrowded
time to secure accommodation elsewhere.
His Excellency remarked that the fact that there were 40 vacant houses in Kow- loon capable of accommodating, say, 10,000 persons, showed t' at overcrowding was not due to lack of accommodation. Still, to prevent hardship, the matter will be consid- ered by the Government with the view of adding a clause to the Bill,

Rongkong Tides.
The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office In London from the result of the analyals of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa- ter Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsul during the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table is Low Water Or- dinary Spring Tides, which has been found to be 2 feet below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height
piven in the table.
