ILL
2nd January, 1902, Took sampan down River from Shameon, passing outside long rows of the famous, so-called, flower boats-really floating places of resort, some of them quite large, two-storied, gilded, mirrored and chan- deliered Moored side by side, these latter form regular floating streets, and people on thera pass freely from one to the other. Some of them are, it is said, of question- [able character, but the greater number aro not. To these latter Chinamen go at night only at least seldom in daytime-ns to a club, to have suppers and to have girls sing and dance before them. This is the outcome of the Chinese social system which makes it improper for a man to bring his gentle- men friends home to enjoy an evening's singing in his own and his women-folks'
company.

THE RIVER CRAFT. Bany and varied are the craft to be seeir. Besides sampans and junks, a few examples
are;
Ma lan-teng, or fast boat. Built for use when great urgency is required. Commonly known as the 'slipper boat,' because shap ed like a Chinese slipper, ie., enclosed at the toe and wide open at the heel. Mr Clark has travelled eight miles in one hour one of them. They are propelled by

House-bats, in which people live when travelling some distance;
Stern-wheeler, worked, à la treadmill, by relays of from four to six men. This is of fair size and used for carrying passengers- and light goods. It is certainly curious. In fact, the River constitutes Canton's easiest and best means of coinraunication-

Mr Ball here bought a book of poems, in twenty volumes, composed by Chinese Anthors of 1500 years ago for about Mex, $1.50, or less than 70 cents Canadian currency. A price slouble that was asked, but such is the Chinese way of bargaining and getting the full value and more if possible. Accordingly, the denlor was. beaten down, but finding the price asked still too high, we left the store, and return- ing and feigning indifference as to purchas ing, got the lot at a price we considered fair.
Visited American Presbyterian Chapel near by, where Rev. Charles Preston (Mrs OF. Wisner's father) preached daily to the Chinese, when really dying on his feet. This was about fifteen years ago.

vessels.in steps one above the other, with water dripping from each of the three upper miles
that immediately below it- the bottom one containing a float with a brass upright coming through a slit in the top all engraved with the Chinese hours, which, rising with the rising of the water, indicates the flight of time. Without reflecting much about it, it seemed to me that two tubs instead of four might have been made to answer the purpose, but, on Mr Ball's enquiring for me of the Chinese attendant, he was informed that the four tubs represented respectively the sun, mom, stars and constellations, which may be a truly good reason according to Chinese ideas.
We next turned along the Avenue of Benovelence and Love,' the longest and one of the straightest streets in Canton, runn ng from the West Gate right through the centre of the City to the East, Gute.
THE TEMPLE OF BORRORS.
Our next stopping-place in the Temple af Horrors,' as Europtions, know it or the Temple of the God of the City.' The Chinese believe that in the next world there is a full set of officials, as in a Chin- ese City in this world, and former Gov- inors of Canton are supposed to rule over it in turns. They also believe that there are ten judges in Hades.
Part of the
entrance to this temple is taken up with small compartments, five on either side, with large-sized tigures representing the courts of these different judges, and the punishments inflicted by their order. These ponishments, so far as we could make out and remember, are as follows;
1. Being boiled in molten lead of boiling
il:
2. Being ground in a mill-including a representation of a dog below waiting to lick up the blond:
3. Being placed between two boards and awn asunder;
4. Being turned into lower 'animals- representation shewing a man actually in the process-partly man and partly boast; 5. Being flogged on the bare nether- tackle-being laid out on the ground, face downwards, for the purpose.
The others, on account of the bid state of repair in which they are, and our being very much hurried, we could not quite make out.
I should also noto the representation of the Judge's Looking-glass, by which he is able to see all the deeds done in this life by those he is called upon to judge.
The whole entrance to this temple also is infested with gamblers, fortune-tellers of various kinds, and the sides lined up with the stalls of miscellaneous vendors, and my friend recalls the necessity on the part of Christ to cast out the money-changers, &c., from the temple at Jerusalem.

ST ANDREW'S BALL,
Yesterday evening, a Ball in honour of St Andrew's Day was held in the Amoy Club Theatro, beautifully decorated for the occasion. With so many gun-boats in this year, the event has assumed a greater importance than usual, for what ladies but aro specially pleased to dance with our gallant defenders of the deep? Surely the Directors must be prepared to give us their reasons for this change of policy before expecting the shareholders' sanction. The circular issued hartly touch es this question, and certainly does not carry conviction that their change of pro- cedure is justified. In my own mind, I am convinced the late Chief Manager, from his long and faithful services, gained an undue influence with the Board of Directors. In fairness, it should be said that this was not uunatural, but it now turns out unfor tunate. It is an easy matter to be wise after the event, and I wish in no way to cast reflections on the then Directors. Had the reasonable sum of £75,000 bean ask- on a charge of being concerned in an armed
