A NEW YEAR'S TRIP TO CANTON, 1802,

11.

We arrive at Canton early this morning (1st January), our steamer beingatthe wharf when we awake. We find our way to the London Missionary Society's house, on Shamoen, where the Rev. W. W. and Mrs Clayson kindly put me up, the Rev. C. Dixon Cousins having, invited me to share his room. After broakfast and family worship, I was present when my three hosts wore having a little 'grind' at their Chinese language study. My powers of dis tinguishing soule of the 'tones' were tested afraid. A story was tolda of Missionary now and pronounced "fair,'—outof kindness, Iam

resident in Hongkong, who was telling the natives, in a serinon, about the pearly gates of heaven. He had the right sounds and tones, but reversed their orde:-the result being that they were given to believe that the gates were made of pork, which was, no doubt very satisfactory to his con- gregation, ns the Chinaman rivals the Irish- man in his love for pork, dead or alive!

|

Mrs Clayson receives a good-sized hax from Home, which arrived and was opened in our presenco. It included fancy articles of various kinds, Photographs, cakes, candies, nuts, and a pot of jam, the whole calculated to give great pleasure. The last-named, however, having fermented in the Red Sea, burst, spoiling all the other contents of the box. This was, needless

and must have been a terrible disappoint- mont, though she acted bravely.

We also call on Rev. H. J. Stovens, in

the adjoining house, and there mest Miss Powell, who also arrived from Hongkong this a.m., the latter for the first time, hay- ing but newly arrived from the old country. During the morning, with Mr. Ball and Mr Cousins. I visit

apparent.

I also see a man undergoing the wooden collar' (or cangue) punishment, so often seen in pictures of travel in China. He was buddled on his haunches close against the side of one of those awfully narrow stroets, and a very busy one at that, with his face turned away from the public, an object of shame and utter misery. Inside the collar. as well, there was an iron chain of some weight. It certainly was not intended to break the weight of the heavy collar on his neck, as it may truly be said that the tender mercios of the Chinese are cruel.' Unless his friends, or some one kindly dis- posed, helped him to food and refreshment, the poor wretch must have died, as the collar was so big as to provent his hand from reaching his mouth.

As an introduction of the last few years, Mr Ball directed attention to some good. sized warehouses with large stocks of American flour.

In the riots at Canton in 1883, Shaincen was invaded by the Chinese mob, and six- teen houses and the Concordia Theatre were burned, the British Consulato vacated and the flag hauled down-the Consul going aboard one of the ships in the stream. British residents, missionaries and all, were organized for defence, and the women and children sent away to Hongkong. Mr T. Clark recalls seeing Mr Pearce with a musket on his shoulder-though it was! bintel that he had been drilled as to which end of the weapon to keep pointed away from himself. Mrs Pearce and her infant son had been sent down in the 9.9. Kiung- Chow to Hongkong. As the telegraph | wires hart been cut, this vessel conveyed the first news of the disorders, from the British Consui to the Commodore at Hong- kong, and his requisition for help. She was caught in, and delayed, by a severo ty- phoon. When she arrived, however, two gunboats, which had been under steam overnight doing battle-with-the-weather, CA. were immediately despatched. THE RAVAGES OF WAR.

Of war's ravages dwollers in South Africa know too much, but fortunately not all. There surely is nothing more depressing than the spectacle of burnt and looted villages and farms, vineyards and fruitful fields wasted and spoiled, with here and there rasted and abandoned ma chinery. Of all these horrors this continent can furnish examples enough and to spare; yet when compared with the desolation which mark- ed the track of the invading army through highly-cultivated and populons Franco in 1870-71, there is scarce a sign of damage in the theatre

of the late war.

The war waged by discase against man is in many respects like the war waged by inau against man. Its most important difference is that it knows no peace, but fights ceaselessly until it slays or is slain. It knows nothing either of armistice or compromise

There could surely be no greater torture than to slowly starve to death in the midst of plenty, writes Mr. J. Kelly, of Dobson Street, Port Elizabeth, S.A., on March 12, 1902; yet -that-wan-tho- fate which once stared me in the faco. For thirteen years I was afflicted with tapeworm, and from being a strong and healthy . man declined to a state of weakness and ema- ciation-derived little or no nourisanont from food and my consequent lassitude ren. dered me quite unfit for my ordinary daily work. I was living at Durban at the time, and the doctor who had charge of my case there tried several methods to free mo of hay trouble, but was powerless to effect that which Mother Seigel's Carative Syrup afterwards so specdily accomplished. On soveral occasions I was made to abstain from solid food for as long as five consecutive days, and for mouths at a time lived without requiring the aid of a knife and fork. One mixture, which my ductor gave me as a last resore, I took for four months, and at the end of that time was us bad as over. Loffen think of all that I suffered during those years, and wonder how I endured it; but the bitterest part is to know, as I do now, that the misery was quite unuècossary. Having met with a pamphlet which described how others who had suffered from the same com- plaint had been cared by Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup, I at once perceived that the treatment to which I had submitted was entirely wrong. I resolved to take a course of it, and ny resolution was rewarded with completo success. Unlike the inaffectual attempts to starve or poison the cause of my trouble, Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup gave power to the stomach to perform its natural functions, and by removing all impurities from the system completely freed me of my torment. It took only six bottles to produce this grand result.

Mrs. Jano Edworthy, of Lobson Street, Port Elizabeth, S.A., described on February 28, 1902, the relief she had experienced from a totally different malady by employing the same means as had restored Mr. Kelly to health. I enffered, Bays Mrs. Edworthy from general. weakness and a dreadful-down sensation. Fearful headaches, reduced me to such a state of weakness that at last I was unable to do little. things for myself, and I was much troubled by a sharp pain between the shoulders. Mother Beigel's Curative Byrup having been recommend ed to me; I was induced to buy a bottle, and experianced so much benefit from it that I bought two others.
