FOR BABY'S SKIN

SCALP AND HAIR

Something for Mothers to Think About EVERY CHILD born into the world with an inherited or carly developed tendency to distressing, disfiguring humours of the skin, scalp, and blood, becomes an object of the most tender-solicitude, not only because of its suf- fering but because of the dreadful fear that the disfigura- tion is to be lifelong and mar its future happiness and prosperity. Hence it becomes the duty of mothers of such afflicted children to acquaint themselves with the best, the purest, and most effective treatment available, viz., THE CUTICURA TREATMENT.

Warm baths with CUTICERA SOAP, to cleanse the akiu of crusts and scales and soften the thickened cuticle, gentle anointings with CoveURA Õist- MENT, to instantly allay itching, irritation, and inflammation, and soothe and heal, to be followed in the severer cases by mild doses of CUTICURA RESOL- VENT PILLS (see below), to cool and cleanse the blood, are all that can be desired for the alleviation of the suffering of skin-tortured infants and children and the comfort of worn-out, worried mothers. A single set is often sufficient to cure when the best physicians fail.

Millions of Women Use Cuticura Soap

Assisted by CUTICURA OINTMENT, for preserving, purifying, and beautifying the skin, for cleansing the scalp of crusts, scales, and dandruff, and the stopping of falling hair, for softening, whitening, and Boothing red, rough, and sore hands, for baby rashes, itchings, and chaings, in the form of baths for annoying irritations and Inflammations, or too free or offensive perspiration, in the form of washes for ulcerative weaknesses, and for many sanative, antiseptic purposes which readily suggest themselves to women, especially mothers, and for all the purposes of the tollet, bath, and nursery,

CUTICURA RESOLVENT PILLS (Chocolate Coated) are prepared to meet the wants of delicate women, and sensitive children, and are pure, sweet, and tasteless. They are beyond question the most successful blood purifiers and humour cures yot compounded.

CUTICURA HEMadina are sold Ukroughout the world. Australian Depot: R. Towns &.Co, Sydney. British Depoli 27-28, Charterhouse Sq-London. French Depot: 5 Rue de la Paix, Paria. POTTIE DEDO AND CAK. Cor, Sole Props, Boston, U. 8. A. "All about the Skin," free.

LECTURE BY A BOER GENERAL.

Caustic Criticism of British

Generals.

A lecture was delivered in the Queen's Hall, Fangham-placo, London, by Assistant Commandant Genoral Ben Viljoen, of the lato Burgher Forces, to a considerable audience.

Mr Ben Nathan, in introducing the lecturer, said that Commandant Malan was unable to appear, owing to a bad cold. He stated that the lecturer had no desire to see- the Terms of Peace altered, had not had an interview with the Colonial Secretary (hear, hear), and had not tried to ses the German Emperor (laughter). He had fought with great bravery, and had lost all he possess ed, and now thought it his duty to try to earn a little money hy lecturing to form a fund-not only for himself, but for those immediately connected with him, so that he might start afresh in South Africa. General Ben Viljoen, speaking in English, traced the first cause of the War back to the Jamieson Raid (hear, bear), Despatches wore too hastily exchanged, and if more time had been taken on both sides, and if more common sense had been used, there need not have been a warfhear, hear); Another cause was Mojuba. The Engilsh wished to wipe out that, and the Boers were of the belief that they could repent their success. An element of discoutent was found in Johannesburg, where the mining magpates tried all they could to promote dissatisfaction. The labour classes wore in their hands, even though the latter had no quarrel with tho Boers. He was glad that the magnates were now tn pay a portion of the War Indemnity (hear, hear) Speaking of the Boer Generals, he said they had their share newspaper heroes, whether the

mandos. Mentioning the engagements he had been in, he spoke of Elands Langto as a place where they were smashed up. They lost one-third of their men killed and wounded, and another one-third captured, Ho barely got away from the Gordon Bigh- landers, and then ran up against the Laucers, Very few were killed by the lance, was afterwards dis. a weapon which carded, He was engaged in the Siege of Ladysmith, and after that the most pro- minent fight he was in was Spion Kop. The way the British attacked them was something to be proud of; and the Boers in their turn did their best. The position was taken by the British, and what caused the English Generals to abandon it again was still a Chinese puzzle to the Boers (hear, hear). One of the Generals holding the Boer left actually retreated that night, leaving his ammunition waggons behind him. They could not understand the British movements (A Voice; No wonder you like Buller). In the attack on Vaal Krantz ho had 70 guns concentrated on his position and lost half his men. He was attacked by General Fronch at Klips Riverberg. There the Scots Groys-a tine regiment--attacked them, and the lecturer was wounded. French, however, after two days captured Johannesburg. After Diamond Fields,

when the speaker was made a General, he attacked General Hutton, but was beaten off. He was also present at the six days' fight at Bergendaal. Ho had a six weeks'

trek on leaving the railway line, and then came up with General Paget, where, after three days, he had to abandon his position, owing to his ammunition becom ing exhausted. General Paget had describ) ed that as a victory. A fight he was proud of was that where they surprised the Liver- pools and captured a big naval-gun ununed Lady Roberts. It was not much use to them. He expressed regret that one of the officers, Major Cotton, got his congé from the " Army for losing the position, while another man who came out and fired a few shots got the D,S.O. (shaine). In the attack on the Delgoa Bay line, he met the Royal Irish -who, said he, were a regiment who fought splendidly. He was afterwards captured by the regiment, and they were naturally glerful that they had paid out an okl score (laughter). Ho was bundled off at once for St. Helena. Coming to speak about the future of South Africa, ho thought that the best possibilities existed for the peaceful future of the country; all talk about a new rising or of Boer dissatis faction was a nightmare.

A NEW YEAR'S TRIP TO

CANTON, 1902.

I

Having lived for over two years in Hongkong, I must be considered as very unenterprising indeed for not having paid

Int least one visit to Canton-only 80 or 85 miles away, one of the greatest cities of the world and the greatest comercially, and in population, of the Chinese Empire. I had often been told that Hongkong with its preponderating Chinese population, its narrow streets, native stores, &c., was not, for all that, a Chinese city, and that beyond my half-day look see' in the native city at Shanghai I had not seen what a real Chinese city was like. Now, however, that my good friend Mr J. Dyer Ball offers to be my guide, the way being open for the trip over the holidays on January 1st and 2nd,

and the scaron being the best suited for the purpose, I gladly avail myself of the opportunity.

In view of the importance to Hongkong and to British trade of the great water- system which drains its natural hinterland, it is to be hoped that Great Bitain is keeping her eye open to the activities of the French in extending their influence in this region through the opening of post ollices, the display of naval power in the rivers, &c., as there can be no doubt that an extension of their Indo-China posses. sins northward to include Macao and Kwangtung Province is one of their dreams of
