THE EARTH'S CRUST.
to be Now that the earth's crust seems getting into such an explosive condition, it is satisfactory to learn (says The Standard) that one alleged volcano has been proved an impostor. As a telegrain from Odessa states, the rent which had formed on the side of a mountain near Irkutsk, in Siberia, and was said to be emitting steam and white hot material, has been toned down by some scientific investigators to nothing mora serious than leds of carbonaceous shale or slate, which had caught, fire, very probably from spontaneous combustion. Cases of the kind are not uncommon, and this is by no means the first that has occurred towards theinterior of Asia. Volcanoes were formerly asserted to oxist in the Thian Shan chain, and we find lists of them given by some authorities; but, during the last few years, Russian travellers have investigated them, and in no single case has the statement been authenticated. One of them, indeed, Katon in the Ili Valley, was an exact parallel to the so-called Irkutsk erupti n. for it turned out to be nothing more than some beds of coal which had become ignited. Volcanoes are also said to exist in the Interior of China, but Recording to the most recent English book the subject this cannot be regarded as certain, and the report not impossibly may have a similar foundation. In fact, all the great mountain chains in interior of Asia, from the Himalayas to the Thinn Shan. appear to be remarkably free from volcanoes, A few craters exist. on the high plateaux of Tibet, between the Kuen Lun chain and the Lob Nor, and one or two others have been described on the North- ern side of the Desert of Ghi, but all appear to be extinct. Ignition from spontaneous combustion may, of course, occur wherever rocks of the right mineral composition exist. Tho material must be wather inflammable, and some chemical sistance

A selfstriking match. The former condition is common enough. A chip, for instance, of the well-known oil-shales of the Central Valley of Scotland can be readily lit in candle-flame, and, if quictly with drawn, continues to burn for some time. The natural kindling is commonly done by brasslike pyrites, or iron sulphido, a

not coal-pit banks are quently tired, and sometimes even seamis in the pit, when putting them out is a difficult and costly task. But any kind of bituminous rock may be ignited, and a easy similar to those already mentioned actually occurred on the South coast of our own country. At Ringstead Bay, in Dorset, the clid's are formed of Kimeridge Clay, a dark shaly mass belonging to the Upper Oolites, which is so bituminous as to be sometimes used, notwithstanding its un- pleasant odour, for fule by neighbouring cottagers, and the same has been work-

Tolima and Cotopaxi are about ono hundred and twenty-five miles away: Popocatepetl and Sangai, soine thirty miles more distant: but as steam is so freely ejected during every eruption, not only in immenso volumes from the crater, but also disengaged from the flowing laya, it is difficult to see how a sufficient supply can be maintained, if it has no other source then the water which has fallen from the sky as rain and percolated through the ground.

EDUCATION IN CANTON.
Examination for Teachers of
Higher Grade Schools.
There is a demand and an increasing demand for well qualified teachers to take charge of the new schools, into which western education has been introduced into the curriculum. The officials who are looking after this department are showing a good example that might be followed with advantage in Hongkong. In order to obtain properly qualified teachers, a series of examinations are being held to get hold
of the best men. As an illustration of the gradual upward tendency a specimen of some of the questions given in the third examination will perhaps be of some in
