WESTLEY,
I say that the cult of games, whether that cult of games was the cult of chariot racing in the declining Eastern Roman Empire, when then the Greeks allowed the Turks to accumulate on the other side of the Bosphorus while they wore betting. about green and blue chariots; or whether it ba tho mere gambling characteristics of some arces, in the East, Chinese, or
furiously excited about horses and neglect all other intorsts, their families and everything else, by betting on an- imals that they could not ride; or whether it is people crowded to hurrsh a few men or boys playing cricket at Lord's-I say that this kind of cult, excitement about football and other gaines, by fellows who cannot play any game, betting on horeses by follows who cannot ride horses-not one in five of the young gentlemen who enter Sandhurst could sit a horse or know anything about horses-I say that this kind of cult of games is a thing to bo condemned and is fatal to the proper mental and moral train- ing of our race.
Of course boys must play games, but, saya Dr Maguire, 'when you become a man you, ought to put away childish things. 1731X

A DEFENCE OF THE PUBLIC SCHOOL PRODUCT. An editorial of the Monthly Reviere is de- voted to a reply to Dr Maguire, retorting bitterly against his attack upon the public school product. The writer of the editorial is indeed so much put out that, he refers to Dr Maguire as a writer whom we see no reason for naming." Of the main con- tention of Dr Maguire, that men who have serious business in life should not waste their time in gaines, he says nothing. But ho argues that South Africa was saved by Lord Roberts and Lord Kitchener, one of whoi

the public school spirit will be found plentifully. Further the two arms of the service which have covered themselves with
glory in South Africa are the Royal Artil-
lery and the Royal Engineers, formed mostly of public schoolmen. The people who did most to bring about the failure in South Africa were older. men than those holding the highest commands, and who having been thirty years exposed to the influence of a luxurious, idle, and frivolous socioty, no longer preserved the public school character. The writer maintains, that the typical virtue of the playing field is the faculty of putting the game first and self last, and refusing under all temptation to do that which is harmful to the players of one's own sile or unchivalrous to "ne's opponents.
Scientific investigations have revealed the true nature and composition of cod iver oil, which have been thoroughly, verified by experience. No longer is it necessary to force down a dose of nauso- ating, repulsive cod liver oil to get its medicinal effects. The extractives-the tonic, curative, re-building part-may be taken separately in a pleasantly palatable form and with far better result. The grease-the oil-is not only useless, but is undesirable and often detrimental.

HONGKONG C.C. 7. A NAVAL TEAM.
Teams of twelve men a-side played in this match on the Cricket Ground on Sa- turday. The wicket was slow, and a driz ling rain fell at intervals. Batting first, the naval men, thanks to hard-hit innings by Garde, put together 175. Modest as this score was, it should have been consi- derably smaller. The fielding of the Club, with one or two exceptions, was lament- ably weak, catches being missed, fumbling allowing runs to be stolen, and balls that should have been stopped allowed to go to the boundary. It was particularly dis heartening to the bowlers, of whom Ri- mington, though bowling a large number of loose balls, was the most successful.

in the behaviour of the modern officer is a certain want of touch in his dealings with the men.
Of this it is of course difficult to give instances; it is due to the absence of that most valuable yet intangible quality tact. Perhaps the greatest defect of the modern officer is his want of initiative and extraordinary fear of responsibility. Al-
shall allude, to account for this, I think it though there are other causes, to which I Lessee & Manager is largely due first to the ago at which young men join the Army being constantly raised, so that they do not acquire the habit of command in early youth; and next to the fact that there are now very few oppor- tunities of placing young officers in charge

On resuming after half-time, a heavy downpour of rain made it very disagreeable for the players, besides rendering the ball very diflicult to hold, in consequence of which frequent scrimmages, became the order of the day. Play ruled very even until the Naval outsides again got going and a try was scored. The kick, a diflicult one, failed. Good punting between the two backs and a tackle by Morgan were the next features of interest. The Club made determined efforts to draw on level terms and were at length rewarded. Clark gain- ed possession from a throw from touch, and passed to Jordan, who was backing up. He, in turn, passed back to Clark when collared, and the latter gained a try amid Nothing further was much applause. scored.
For the Club, Clark, Hallifax and Mor- gan were the most conspicuous forwards,
centre three-quarters while the two Graham and Pearce-proved a tower of strength, both in attack and defence. The chief weakness in the forwards lies in the fact that they do not heel out smartly en backs to get round the scrum and collar the Club's halves. However, we have no doubt that they will improve in this respect in the match on Thursday next,
