THE TROUBLE IN CHINA.

A Shanghai Opinion. Referring to tolograms announcing British naval movements, the China Gazette of the 20th ult. says:-The signifiant gathering of formidable British battleships and heavy cruisers, at the mouth of the Yangtse, in addition to the numerous vessels of lighter draught, will be welcomed as a sharp and unmistakeable answer to the German and French pretensions lately put forward in this region. The ostensible excuse may be that the state of affairs in Szechucn whore Boxerism is rampant, and the recalcitrance of China over the Hunan massacres, affords ample grounds for the. display of armed force which Great

the river, but we think it would be. only idle to pretend that it is not in- tended quite or much as a warning to Germany especially, whose recent pre- posterous assumption of importance in this region cannot be regarded as less than a challenge to the entire British policy and position in China. By the Railway Con- vention entered into some fow years back between England and Russia regarding railways in Manchuria and the Yangtse basin, it was stipulated that neither would oncroach upon the other's preserves in these regions, and Germany by her agree- mont re the Tientsin-Chinkiang Railway admitted that the Yangtae end of the projected line would be treated as in the British sphere of influence. Having got the open door everywhere (but in Shantung where she keeps it rigorously closed to outsiders), Germany now wants England to abandon her sphere in the Yangtse and to deny the British right to scek economic advantages in that sphere unless they share the same with Germany, The French agreed to the terms which the Germans made behind the back of Great Britain and Japan with Prince Ching over the evacuation of Shanghai, except that they had the decency to strike out the c'ause about economic advantages and con- fined their efforts to the political and strategic side of the question. But it was only the other day that the French paper openly declared that the French soldiers

The fore arm is that part of the leg be tween the elbow and knee, and the olbow is the joint of the fore leg next above the knee, and next to the side.

When a horse forges it strikes the toe of the fore foot with the toe of the hind one, and this is sometimes the result of bad shoeing.
