It was employed to overtake Jacobite conspirators on the Lower Thames, and what is more, the owner's taste, combin- ed with family interest, procured for him Flag rank in the Navy, where bis career was hardly distinguished. Mr Gabe, who may plead that he takes the prevailing modern view, tacitly treats yachting as if it were synonymous with yacht racing. To have money in it, or on it, has apparently become a necessary condition of any sport which is to be widly shared, and the artistic delight felt by Roger North is no longer sufficient. Yet the Cork Harbour Water Club, founded in 1720, the oldest of all, was plainly an association for good. followship, and not for the winning of pots. Their views of conviviality were large. No Admiral was to presume to bring more than two dozen bottles of wine to a treat. We ask with awe how many they had

dared to provide before the restriction was imposed. A full club, be it noted, was six members. If, then, we combine the minimum of clubmen with the maximum of bottles, and suppose, as we fairly may, that no heal-taps were allowed, it follows that the gentlemen about Cork Harbour must have stood in need of all the air and exercise they could got. They did not race, but only sailed about in squadrons, and it is recorded of them that they first permitted ladies to join and wear the uniform. The progress of civilisation has deprived the life of yacht- EIRION No. 2, the Peak, 6 Rooming clubs of much of this geniality, while M House near the Flagstaff;

development of facing has brought in

an element of rivalry which has a painful tendency to degenerate into wrangling. The dispute in the Coronation Sailing 2082 Society, which led to a secession and the establishment of the Royal Thames Yacht Club, is a type of many others

It arose out of the obstinacy of the Committee in assigning a silver cup to one Captain Brocklebank, who had broken a rule. We 4 advance no opinion on the merits of the question, which Mr Gabe, indeed, leaves in obscurity. If there were not rules and measurements to fight over, the life of many yachting men would apparently be a dreary wasto. Be that as it may, yachting is grow- ing more popular all the world over. Of America we need not speak. The story of the Cup is, of course told, once more in these pages, and it is to be raced for again. Germany, in its deep-thinking way is pre- paring to conquer in this as in other fields. fively contests take place in the Baltic with Already her pleasure-boats swarm, and Danes and Swedes. Before another gener- ation is out she will be breaking records here, as on the North Atlantic with pass- enger steamers, She might be employed. We make her yachtsmen, and all others, a present of a motto in another quotation from Roger North - And I must needs recommend it to all persons that are fond of pleasure to gratify all in- clinations in this way, which makes health the chief good we know, rather than those which weaken nature and destroy health,

What it Means to London, The probable removal of the P. and (). feet from London to Southampton and its effect on the trade of the port was the sub- ject of keen discussion in shipping circles. yesterday, says the Daily Express of tho 29th ult.

From the time of the dock strike or ganised by Mr John Burns the largo steam- ship companies have slowly drifted away to Liverpool Antwerp, Dunkirk, Hamburg, Southampton, and other ports. One of the last to piigrate was the Castle Line to the Cape, which now runs conjointly with tho Unior liners from Southampton.

In answer to inquiries made at the P. and. Company's office, Leadenhall-streot, as to the reasons for their removal, an Express representative was informed that the directors had not yet settled definitively their future plans. The whole matter was under consideration.

Not the docks, but the state of the River Thames was the principal, difficulty in the way of their large steamers coming up to London.

Then, shipowners cumplain that it takes from a week to ten days to discharge and load a vessel in London, while a ship can come in and go out within forty-eight hours eigher at Liverpool or Southampton.

One steamer-the Minnehah, of the Atlantic Transport Line-brought over 11,000 tons of grain, and had to carry it to and from between London and Now York for three voyages before the grain was all discharged.

SHIPOWNER'S VIEWS.

In an interview with an Express repre- sentative a managing shipowner said :--

Dock officials,' said this gentleman, *refuse to give any figures as to the amount of merchandise stolen from barges during the year. Even coal is not safe. Shippers of lace, furs, silks, millinery, and other dry goods frequently hear that their cases only contain stones and paper when they arrive at their destination.

A few weeks ago a gentleman consigned

a trunk to the Albert Docks to be placed

in the hold of a steamer on which he was

to travel. On arrival in America he found that the trunk had been opened and bricks substituted for his clothing and property. Our only hope now is that the Govern ment will take some action on the report of the Royal Commission and do something before it is too late."

Southampton people are much excited over the prospective return of the P. and 6. Heet to their waters. The Harbour Board and the London and South-Western Railway Company are prepared to expend the sum of £1,100,000 on deepening and extending the harbour. This will mean deepening the channel to 36ft.

It is estimated that the removal of the flect to Southampton would mean a trade

of £100,000 per week to the town.
