Few would deny that in billiards there is more of luck than in chess. In both cases, however, the bettor player wins, in the long run, the majority of the games. That no games can be absolutely devoid of luck is a proposition scarcely in need of proof. Admitting, then, that chance comes in, the question arises of the comparison of the amount thereof which different games re- spectively contain. Here the only sure method of inquiry seems to be the statis- tical one. The fewer the proportion of games won by the inferior player the less is the force of the element of chance. Judged by this test it appears that the game of draughts contains loss of luck than does the game of chess. During a tour in New Zealand, Mr-Wyllie contested a total of 5,033 games, of which he won 4,810 and That is to say, he lost 7, 210 being drawn lost on the average, one game out of every 719 played. There is no chess player who can boast of such a record.'.
The report of the Hongkong Chess Club shows that the Club has had a fairly good season, and that it is well off financially. It is a notable fact, however, that the same players are most prominent, year in year

The Brooklyn Daily Eagle states that the teams included about half-a-dozen women players, one of whom was Miss Eva Brenzinger of New Brighton, Staten Is- land, daughter of a well-known member of the Staten Island Choss Club. BABY'S COUGH MUST NEVER LINGER
TOTHING is more distressing than to seo a helpless little infant suffering with a cough, and to be fearful of using a remedy which may contain some harmful ingredient. The makers of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy positively guarantee that this preparation does not contain opium in any form, or any other harmful substance. Mothers may confidently give this remedy to their little ones. It gives prompt relief and is perfectly safe. It always cures and cures quickly. For sale by All Dealers; WATKINS Ltd., General Agents.
"Pa, what's a crank?' A crank, my son, is a specialist in any line in which you are not interested.'
A woman that is well, in perfect health, is a rarity. The majority of women have some ailment some disorder of which to complain. They are weak, all-tired-out, broken down,' the roses have vanished from their cheeks, the smile from face, the cheerfulness from the voice. They are peaked, pale and puny. The ruby lips are purplish or blanched, the sparkling eye is dimmed and the bewitching charms of youth are faded. This all due to ill-health. Why women should. be so unhealthful, space will not permit of discussion here. But it is a fact. Their systems aro debilit- ated, all-run-down and need toning up. The stimulating effects of a tonic and tissue builder are required.
Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Oil fills the bill and will produce marvellous results in many cases. Stearns Wine restores health and vivacity, builds up the system with new and healthy tissues and banishes the raging, indescribable pains. The headaches, backaches, bearingdown pains, due to female weakness, disappear under its influence. It is a most excel- lont tonic and reconstructor, Wholesale from A. S. NOISY NEIGHBOURS AT KOWLOON,
To the Editor of the CHINA MAIL.'
Hongkong, 1st November, 1922. DEAR SIR,In the face of rumoura pre- vailing yesterday afternoon that the local press was being squared to suppress the publication of reports of a case heard in the Magistracy yesterday morning in which I was complainant, I think it interesting to note your own fair dealing of the matter by withholding the names of all the parties concerned, while giving what was not an altogether accurate report of details. At the same time, your evening contemporary was altogether silent, and this morning's moulder of public opinion gives ny name and the names of all my witnesses but withholds the name of the real cause of all the trouble-that of the defendant. This does not seem altogether fair, and can only operate to raise prejudice against my. self and those who helped me to adjust a grievance according to British methods. There were three reporters present, and I think it only right to give your contempo- raries an opportunity of publicly correcting what may really be a false impression pre- vailing against them.-Believe me, yours Cc.,

Hongkong Tides. The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanao Office In London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa-
tor Police Basin at Taim Sha Tsui during
the years 1887-8-9.
The zero of the table is Low Water Or dinary Spring Tides, which has been found to b 2 feet below mean sea level.
To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft, 7 in., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height.
