The reason is not far to seek. Bovril is ancurnisher as well as a stimulant. It

Explorations in Tibet.

To the current number of the Geographic- al Journal (says The Standard), Dr Sven Hedin contributes a concise summary of his remarkable explorations in Eastern Turkestan and Tibet during the last three

years. His former journey in Central Asis-from 1893 to 1797-was thought, as

ho modestly observes, to mark an advance in the geographical knowledge of those regions, but he considers the results of this one to be much more valuable. In it be has traversed a great extent of hitherto untrodden ground, and has been able, as he justly claims, to lift the veil which for a thousand years has hidden vast stretches of the mountainous and desert régions of the heart of Asia.' They are without a rival on the surface of the globe. The mountain chains of Central Asia radiate from the Pamirs-the roof of the world- like giant roots from an old tree stump.. Two of thesu, the vast compound mass of the Himalayas and Karakorains and the chain of the Kuen-lun, enclose the greatest and loftiest mountain-plateau in the world, not a little of which overtops. Mont Blanc, and much is as bigh above-

Often children need a good tonic-some

thing to stimulate their organs to the full performance of healthful function, or arouse latent energies. A failure to give a good tonic at such times is to withhold from the child a stimulus that may materially effect the future happiness and success of its life.

** Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Oil is a tonio and :- tissue-builder admirable adapted to children. It is delicious in tasty and they like it. It does not disturb their stomachs and has no drawbacks. Its in- fluence is for good only it makes children grow, makes their eyes bright, their check rosy. It makes them gleeful and full of life. It forms them into stalwart men and healthful women. region traversed-au arid lowland, with the shifting saltd-dures for hills. In one place

on the right bank of the Tarim, a chain of long lakes bordered by stérile · sandslas boen formed, which are continued between lunes sometimes more than a hundred yards high, by a suries of depressions, each covered by clay and absolutely barren. This tendency to shift its bed becomes more pronounced as the river approaches the region where it perishes among the desert sands, and tho Tarim, in- stead of emptying itself into the ancient lake of Lob Nor,

gues on past it and forms the lake of Kara-Koshun, farther to the South.'. The position of the former has been a matter of dispute, which Dr Seven Hedin has sat at rest. The anci- ont lake has now completely dried up, but on its Northern shore he found ruins of towns, settlements, and temples, as well as manuscripts and tablets of tamarisk-wood, in Chinese charactors, dating from the Third.to the Fifth Centary of the present era, together with indubitable

traces

of an ancient caravan road. His former journey was rewarded by similar archa-olo- gical discoveries farther West in Turkestan, so that evidently the region was much more flourishing some fifteen centuries ago. Partly this has been the work of man, but perhaps it is still more due to change in clituate. A very large portion of Central Asia, not only in the region East of the Thian-shan, but even in that to the West of this chain seems to be gradually drying up, but that may the cause of the desicca tion no one call venture to declare posi-

tively.

The Manila. Share Market.

In their market report a week ago, Messrs W. A. Fitton and Co., Manila, say: -Given the abnormal state of affairs, we we are finding it harder each month to issue a circular of this nature-the first of its kind ever published in these Islands.

We

do not like to be considered too pessimistic, but the fact that things are going from bad to worse stares us in the face; we can safe- ly way we have not yet seen the worst. Unless the agricultural, proposition has attention, the troubles ahead of us are much greater than the average resident of Manila anticipates; the city. is merely the capital, not the Philippines, and we anticipate government aid will be required for districts

met-

where hitherto they were competent to help themselves, unless the unexpected happens. Banks doing other than excharge business are urgently required; there are excellent chances for concerns willing to take merely ordinary banking risks. Money is altogether too tight these days, and facilities offered business people are few and fir between. There is an utter lack of confidence pervading bankers and ebants, and, much as we would like to see it removed, we are compelled to admit there is justification for the most extreme conservatism in all business operations. Capital is urgently required here, but until money in oasier and business people regain contidence, prospects of any change are faint. We could name half-a-dozen con- cerns which pay extremely well and are likely to continue doing so, but there is no money, no demand, no movement, and little possibility of any, unless there is a radical change. Wo have every faith in the. future of these Islands, and, segregation, of politics and colonies would materially help things; the local authorities know what is required here much better than 'politicians

at home.

I

AM writing personally to say how much I havo benefited by taking your Stearns' Wine of Cod Liver Oil, it is so nice to take, tasting just like Port, is easily digested and leaves no unpleasant taste, which ordinary Cod Liver Oil does. I have become much stouter, and bad coughs, which wore my constant trouble, havo quite ceased. I think your preparation wonder- ful in its work, and everywhere I go shall not fail to recommend it.

Yours faithfully,

Hongkong Tides. The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of an au- tomatic tido-recording machine in the Wa tor Polleo Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table la Low Water Or- dinary Spring Tides, which has been found

to be 2 feet below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gange at the Victoria Naval Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gangs at Lamont Dock, Abordeon, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the height
