Fortunately for Hongkong, the protracted drought of the early part of the year was follow- ed by a plentiful rainfall, and unless another period of unusual drought follows the quantity of water impounded here and on the mainland should be sufficient to carry the Colony over to the next rainy season. But in South China, with little prospect of heavy rains for months to come, the damage done is quite irretrievable, The wells will soon dry up, and there is no systematic storage, as at Hongkong and Shanghai. The autumn crops are in a bad state in Kwangtung and Fokien Provinces, and famine seems to be inevitable. Al- ready the rivers are very low, so that only light draught vessels can navigate them. In Amoy, the wells are drying up, and where the people are to get their fresh water supplies from has become a very serious question. At that port, there has been a steady and alarming decrease in the rainfall, as the following figures for the last six years will show :-1897, 57.75 inches; 1898, 46.24; 1899, 43.61; 1900, 38.70; 1901, 36.28, and for the first eight months of this year 25.13. Hongkong Tides. The Tide Table given below has been compiled by the Nautical Almanac Office in London from the result of the analysis of observations taken by means of a au. tomatic tide-recording machine in the Wa tor Police Basin at Tsim Sha Tsui during

the years 1887-8-9.

The zero of the table is Low Water Or dinary Spring Tides, which has been to be 2 feet below mean sea level.

To obtain the depth of water on the tide gauge at the Victoria Navel Yard add 5 ft. 7 in., and on the gauge at Lamont Dock, Aberdeen, add 12 ft. 9 in. to the hoight piven in the table.
