BOVRIL ISN'T DEAR,
in fact, value for value, it is one of the cheapest drinks and one of the most economical foods that can be obtained. A cup of hot Bovril costs less than a drink of whisky, and while giving more genuine and lasting warmth than the latter, contains, in addition, the nutritive prin- ciples of beef worth inany times its cost.
Old fashioned beef tus and meat ex- tracts, whether known as such, or disguised under more pretentious modern names contain none of the NUTRITIVE pro- perties of beef. Baron Liebig himself admitted this fact; there is not a doctor to Used as a nourishment. day disputes it. Meat Extract is probably the most ex pensive article one can buy. Bovril one of the cheapest.

The full Census for Scotland, though it adds, of course, largely to the inforwa tion supplied by the interim Report of June last year, does not modify to any appreciable extent, the estimate then made of the number of the population. The difference between the figures of the Returus sent in by the Registrars at that date and the carefully revised lists is only 103a very minute dis- crepancy, which speaks well for the thoroughness shown in making the summaries. The exact total of the WILH 4,472,103, and is, for the first time since the people were accurately numbered, We find that larger than the Irish. the changes taking place in the distribu- tion of the population of North Britain do not differ from those of England. This standard was not, indeed, reached in the ten years between 1891 and 1901, when the rate of increase was 11.00 per cent. If there is no change. in coming years Scotland will double its inhabitants by about the year 1967. Calculations which reach so far are liable to be falsified, and it is hardly probable that there will be nine million persons' North of the Tweed in this century. Even the United States, with the help of an enormous immigration, has nos filled up to the extent estimated some forty years ago. The presence of an increased number of foreigners is to be taken as a tribute to the prosperity of Scotland, which was, at no

period, very far from being in a posi tion to attract strangers. The total number of foreigners in Scotland at the Census was 22,627, of whom 14,448 were males, and 8179 females, Russian nationality stood pre-eminently to the fore, there being 10,373 Russians ;. We should like to know, more fully than the Blue-book is able to tell us, why men and women of this nationality should be found in so large a proportion. The details given by the Census as to the extent to which Gaelic is spoken prove the tenacity with which a minority will adhere to their tongue, even when every influence is against its survival. There are still 28,105 men and women in Scotland who speak no other language, and 202,700 who use this and English.

Osaka is the first commercial city of Japan, and forms the centre of distribution of merchandise. It is the most progressive city, and its industriol development in the past few years has been great. Among its many attractions to visitors are the the Castle, now nearly ruined; the old Shingo temple of Tenjin, dedicated to the sacred mazaory tf Sugawara no Michi- zane, the great scholar and statesman; the old Buddhist temple of Tennoji, built by the Imperial Princo Shotoku Taishi over a thousand years ago; The Imperial Mint, organized in 1871 by The Imperial Govern- ment; the two temples of East and West Honganji, &c.
There are many interesting places within a short distance from Osaka. Nara, the ancient capital, with its old temples and its art treasures, is renched by rail in a few hours, and the famous Yoshino, where thousands of cherry trees blown near the end of April, is within a few hours' jour- noy. Madame Melba.
Madamo Me'ba,' reports Mr George Musgrove, who has just returned to Aus- tralia, will give five concerts in Melbourne, five in Sydney, three cash in Adelaidė and Brisbane, and, if time can be found, four in New Zealand The latter, however, de- pends entirely upon the date of the de- parture of the San Francisco mail, Madame Melba is due in America for a grand opers season by a certain date, and it will be a squeeze to get the Now Zealand tour in the programine. The Adelaide season will be daring the week after the Melbourne Cup. Madame Melba will not sing during the racing carnival. She is not coming out for money, but primarily to see her old friends and relatives, Although T pointed out that all the country folks would be in Melbourne during the Cup week she finally declined to sing then. She was very emphatic on that point, and said to me, "No, I'm not going to sing in Melbourne during the Cup week, I will pay my company, but I'm going to see the races with the boys and girls.'
'I received,' said Mr Musgrove, “nume- rous letter on the way out from various bodies requesting to be allowed to give Madame Melba a public welcome, but my instructions from her were that she is going to land in Australia as a private individual, She intends to spend some time with her family, and after the public have heard her sing she will accept other invitations. Ma- dame Melba showed me a cheque for 1,000 singneus the Rothschilds had given her for guiing two songs, Madame Molba carns in England about £2,000 a week for the season but the calls upon her for charities, and the assistance she gives to every Australian who, appeals to her, reduce her income consider- ably. Miss Ada Crossley is a great success and earns more money than any other con tralto in England.
The days of mythological beliefs have gono. This is an era of science-a mat- ter-of-fact age. The darkness of igno- rance and superstition is giving way to the penetrating light of modern science-the revelation of facts. Modern science has discovered that the best medicinal cod liver oil, in its analysis, may be separated into two distinct parts one the clarified oil; the other, a mass of certain semi-solid sub- stances, known as extractives. The oil is not materially different from other, fixed oils and has little or no medicinal value. On the other hand, the extractives aro peculiarly active, and the conclusion cannot be avoided, that to the presence of these active principles cod liver oil owes its re- putation as a remedy, No other if has such a reputation. No other vil his such constituents. The extractives hold the same relation to cod liver oil that quinine sustains to crude cinchona bark. They are the curative essence of cod liver oil. When taken as they may be freed from the vile, unnecessary uil, their curative value is greatly increased, for they are not hamper- ed by the presence of the noxious fat. Upon this scientific fact.
Stearns Wine of Cod Liver Oil is based, It t represents All the curative properties of the best cod liver oil in a vinous preparation. It also contains the best form of iron, making it also an ideal iron tonic. Wholesale from A. S. Watson

The vessol glided off the ways without a hitch, and enthusiastic cheers word raised as Mrs Goetz broke the bottle of wine on the hows and again when the tugboat was brought up in the water.
The Robot Cooke is large, much broader and deeper than the Dock Company's pre. sent tug Fume, and will have about double the power. She is a powerful sea-going tow boat, capable of towing ships to neigh- bouring ports, and will be able to handle with ease the largest vessels likely to enter this harbour. She is probably the most powerful tugboat of her class afloat.
The following are her dimensions:- Length between perpendiculars. 150 ft., Breadth, moulded, 27 ft., Depth, moulded, 14 ft. 6 in., Draft, mean, 10 ft. 9 in. These boilers can work
to a pressure of 180 lbs per square inch. Each is fitted with three Fox's corrugated
furnaces.
After the launch, the party ad- journed to the Recreation

Here the entire European staff was as sembled to welcome Mr Grigor Taylor, and Mr Cuff, of the Electrical Department, having been voted to the chair, made a very complimentary speech prior to making the presentation.
