The Chairman said-Gentlemen, as the Directors' Report and Statement of Ac- counts have been in your hands for some time, we will take them as read.

Your Directors are pleased to be able to come before you with what must be considered n very satisfactory report. Circumstances within the knowledge of shareholders have not been favourable during the past year for a business like ours, and yet, in the first year of the Company's existence, we are able to proposo a dividend of 10 por cent (half of which has already been paid) and to set aside what is comparatively speaking a considerable sum for deprecia. tion of stock and fixtures and the reduction of the sum paid for goodwill. A reference to the accounts will show you that the sum written off for depreciation of stock is $9270.88; for fixtures and fittings, $729.12; and for goodwill, $5000. The stock has been valued by our Maunger, who assures us that the valuation is a fair one; but, as you must be aware, a stock like ours is fiable to depreciation from causes quite outside our control, and, therefore, it is extremely desirable that ample allowance should be made for this in the yearly Accounts During the year, the Company acquired the stock and goodwill of a aimilar business carried on by Mrs Sicekausen. The wisdom of this step has been fully justified by results. In the month of April, having in view

Mrs Osborn managed the hit freely all round the wicket, and seven business with great credit to herself and to the satisfaction of your Directors. Having before us the steady increase in the European population of the Colony and the larger number of visitors passing through the Colony, we decided to extend the gentlemen's outfitting department, and while in London Mr Heckford bought an up-to-date stock and engaged a new assist ant who has had experience in this trade, This Department will be conducted in the amaller store meanwhile, and equally re- munerative results to those already attained may be confidently anticipated. dressnaking department has been a decided success, and should the approaching winter season be fuller of social engagements than the last the goods Mr Heckford was able to select in London should be taken off our hands at profitable prices. Mr Arnold asked was it possible to re- cover any of the amounts included in the sum put down for bad dobts. It seemed a very large amount.

The Chairman replied that it was not likely to prove recoverable.

Mr Arvold:

been taken -

Have legal proceedings

The Chairman : In some cases, yes, - Mr Arnold: What was the result?

The Chairman: Several sums were re- covered. I cannot say the exact figure, off- hand.

Mr Arnold: It seems to me that before any amount like that is set down as bad debts every possible means should be used to recover it.

The Chairman : All that has been done, you may be sure, gentlemen. It must be remembered that we took this place over as a going concern, and some of this amount represents a portion of the then book debts, which proved to be bad. In a retail busi ness like this, it is almost impossible tu keep clear of a certain amount of bad debts. I am afraid I cannot give any better ex- planation.

Mr Amold suggested that legal proceed. ings should be instituted in cases where it might be deemed possible to

recover.

The colours of the Hongkong Regiment. were installed in their final place of repose, St. John's Church, yesterday. An escort composed of two companies of the battalion 7in full review uniform marched to the 56 Durbar House, headed by the Regimental band, and, receiving the colours, escorted them up to the Cathedral. Major Berger and the British and native officers marched a little in advance of the escort, the bright uniform of which made an exceedingly pretty picture. Many interested groups of people watched the progress of the mili tary procession, which was met at the west door by the chaplain. A Royal salute | having been played, the choir, chaplain, and the officers, native and British, proceeded up the central aisle, the choir and congregation singing 'Onward, Chris- tian Soldiers' (Sullivan's setting). The escort did not remain for the service, re- turning instead to the barracks, but the 180 | native officers sat with their British brothers in arms in the front row of chancel seats. They seemed to take a deep interest in the solemn service, the musical portion of which was admirably sung by the choir. The responses were Ferid; the Te Deum was Baker in F. The Rev. F T. Johnson, M.A, the chaplain, preached an eloquent sermon appropriate to the occasion, and after the offertory, Lieut.
