The Madras Mail Train Disaster. Calcutta, September 15.--The latest news from the scene of the train disaster at Managapatnam says that 51 bodies have been recovered, including that of the European driver, which was found, head. less, three and a half miles down the stream. The bodies of the European guard and fireman, and of five British soldiers have been buried on the spot.

There are still missing the two nuns, the English clergyman and his bride, and Mr Johnson, of Messrs. Tawker, besides a number of natives. The jewellery, valued at 1 lakhs, which Mr Johnson was taking, has been recovered.

Numbers of bodies are still beneath the dobris.

The Traffic Manager is making enquiries regarding the number of tickets sold for stations beyond Managapatnam, to enable an estimate of the loss of life to be formed. September 16.-The lastest information

of the Madras railway disaster is that 55 bodies have been recovered, consisting of 10 Europeans and Eurasians, and 45 ma. tives,

The dead who have been identified are Driver McFarland, Guard Foulkes, Messrs. Western and Johnson, Mother Theresa. Superioress of Erakolam Convent, and twolvo Indian men and women.

The Christians and M»hommedans have been buried, and the Hindus cremated.

September 17.-Four more bodies have been recovered from the débris of the One of railway accident at Mangapatnam.

the bodies is that of Sister Joseph, of the Ernakolum Convent, and the others are those of three natives.

The amit bags have been recovered. The Lapwing's' Brush with

Armed Dhows. Bombay, September 20.-Details have reached Bombiy of the recent action by 1.M.S. Leaving in the Persian Gulf.

The gur boat was lying at Mohannorah, when intelligence was received of a project. ed attack on Koweit by a fleet of heavily- armed dhown. She steamed towards Koweit, and off Fao came up with the dhows. A hoat party was despatched and fired a couple of guns across the bows of the native craft, to make them stop. Instead

of doing so, those in command of two ENGLAND and AMERICA

of the dhows called out to the approach- ingan-of-war's boat that, if it continued to pursue, it would be fired upon. The sub-lieutonunt in charge, finding himself opposed to a body of men grently superior! in yombers to his own sonall party, return- ed towards the gunboat, and signalled for sistance. The commander of the vessel promptly sent out four more hosts, fully armed with guns and men. Chase was then given to the escaping dhows After being followed for some distance, the men ran their boats on to the muddy shore, and promptly escaped overboard on to the const. The bluejackets quickly followed suit, and a sharp engagement took place between the two armed parties, during the progress of which a bluejacket was killed and another wounded. Various accounts state that between six and a couple of dozen of the men of the dhows were killed. After the fight the natives retreated into the interior. It being impossible to follow them, the British force returned to the const where they took possession of the two dhows, some four hundred rounds of am- munition and several rifles, and it is stated that Turkish seal was found.

The dhows wero afterwards taken in tow by the Lapwing, which then returned with them to Bushoorah.

It is understood that an enquiry will be instituted at Bushoorah, with a view to ascertaining the actual object of the pro- jected attack on Koweit, and whether the crews of the captured craft were Turkish or Persian subjects.

It is further reported that the comman-. der of the Lapwing contemplates applying for permission to arm the two captured dhows, with a view to their being utilised for the purpose of making raids on pirate Belams, numbers of which are stated to infest the Gulf.
