Who are the Boer generals? Who are the pan-Germans? What is Anglophobe! Is it the name
of a place or a person? Who is Sir Thomas Lipton? Why does he challenge? What is the American Cup? What is the Shamrock IIIN'
We replied to the above string of questions, to the best of our mean ability, as follows:-
The Boer generals are not generals, but country farmers, recently employed by the British at great expense in order to teach them how to fight.
'Pan-Germans.' means All-Germans.' These are the Gentlemen who believe that the Almighty made a mistake. when He created other nations beside Germans, and a particularly unfortunate blunder when he made Englishmen. In the opinion of the pan-Germans, all Germans ought to be united, Dutch should became Germans, Boers should become Germans, Poles should beconie. O, and the rest would be not at home."
Tientsin is very select.
The America Cup is a piece of elonga- ted sycee, inuch coveted by English and American people, who nil bouts for it. The man who has the fastest boat keeps it till someone builds a faster boat. An American yachtsman holds it at present, and thinks he is going to keep it, English people having forgotton how to buikl sampans. Sir T. Lipton says, he can build a better sampan than any that can be made in America. He has built two, called the Shamrock I. and Shamrock II., but they did not do the trick, so he is selling more tea (Indian) and building another sampan called the Shamrock III.
· AS HAPPY AS A KING.'
This old saying, like a good many others, is founded upon ignorance, and therefore complete. ly misleading. As a matter of fact kings have rather less of happiness than falls to the share of most private men, Take at random from history the lives of any fifty kings you will and compare them with the lives of any fifty private men, also taken at random, and I'll wager you my last sixpence gou'll find the balance of happiness inclines fly to the privat
me
To be heralded by dru and trumpet wherever yon go, to be spoken either in terms of the extremest adulation of of vulgar abuse, and to serve as a target for the revolver practice of overy crank who nurses a grievance, is not quite the life a wise man would choose if his will had anything to do with the matter. I wish I were a king "ruid Jones to his friend Brown; not what is now-a-days called a king, bat a real king 28 of old-one with anthority to have a few people killed now and again when he felt like it." You are neither a king or a man,' replied Brown, but an ass without ability to eat this- tles. Brown was right. Of all ambitions which away mortal man, that which cost imperial Cusar bis life-ambition to lxcome a king-has least of wisdom in it, and only to be accounted for by monstrous fallacy of supposing that kings are, per se, happier than other men. These thoughts occur to us in considering the case of r Willian lighett, of 7, Elder Street, Adelnido, S.A., who, we were about to say, was as happy as a king notil about three years ago. But that wouldn't be right. With his youthfulness, his health, strength and splendid physique. Mr Highett shot have been, and doubtless was, happier than any king who could be named. Mr Highett writes thus on the 10th of March,
· 1902: I am a ustivo of South Australia, twenty-five years of age, and until three years ago, never knew what it was to be seriously ill. Al that period I was engaged in bash work, right in the heart of the rough North-East District The work was extremely laborious, the food coarse, and the climate red hot. These conditions completely broke down my healti grew weak and thin, continually felt out of sorts, and would get up in the morning feeling more tired than when I went to bed, There was a tight feeling, a distressing sense of oppression about the chest, and I was much troubled by flatulence, which frequently compelled me to rise from my bed and walk the floor for hours. I tried all sorts of pills and medicines for my complaint, but none of them did me any good. Finally I grew so weak that I had to give up my employment, having lost twenty-eight pounds in weight. I then went to Adelaide, and placed myself in the caro of a Erst-clase doctor, who said that my trouble was a bad form of indigestion; but though be treat- ed me for a considerable time I gained no relief. It was at this crisis that a little book was left at the house which, fortunately examining, I found
to be au simanac issued by the proprietors of Mother Seigel's Carative Syrup. In this little work I read of the case of a person whose symptoms wore very similar to mine, and ho claimed to have been thoroughly cured by This fact Mother Seigel's Curative Syrup. determined me to try it, sud I obtained a battlə- without delay. A very few doses were suflicient to cause a great improvement in my condition, which encouraged ine to persevere with it, the result being that in a few week I felt like a new I could eat heartily and enjoy my food, the flatulence disappeared, my sleep was sound and refreshing, and strength and cheerfulness returned to me. That was twelve months ago, and I have enjoyed the best of health ever since.

I always keep a bottle of it by me, and take a dose from time to time, believing that prevon- tion is better than care."

Local shipping agents will read the following paragraph with envy; it is taken from the Manila Times of the 25th ult. There is one industry in these islands which is more profitable than newspaper business evidently, or George Fuller would not be connected with it. Fuller, Godfrey and Harper chartered the rickety old barkentine Logole for 110 Mex. per day and sent her off to Masbate for a cargo of firewoud. They paid $10 a thousand pieces and they brought 260,000 pieces. The cargo is worth $50 per thousand pieces in Manila. The ship was gone 39 days at 110 pesos per day. Profit about $6000 Mex. Not so bad.

THE GOVERNMENT AND THE CUNARD COMPANY.
Rt Hon Gerald Balfour, speaking at the Cutlers' Feast at Sheffield, announced that the. Government had concluded arrange- ments with the Cunard Steamship Company and the Morgan Shipping Trust. The Cunard Company pledge themselves to remain in every respect a British Company, and they will further construct two new vessels which, with their entire fleet, will
remain at the disposal of the Admiralty. For these services, the Government will pay to the Cunard Company an annual subsidy of £150,000. The Government's agreement with the Morgan Shipping Trust secures that the British companies in the combination will remain really British.

A NEW CHINESE THEATRE.
Opposition by the Sanitary Board.
At yesterday's meeting of the Sanitary Board, a plan of a proposed new Chinese theatre on Inland Lot No. 1,207, sent in by Mr E. M. Hazelaud, architect, was under consideration. The building, Mr Hazeland stated, would be used as A theatre and not as an ordinary domestic building, and it had practically open space all round it. It fronted on the Holly wood Road and was opposite the Chinese Re creation Ground which gave it an open space at the front of about 250 feet; on the cast side was Po Yan Strect, 25 ft. 8 in. wide, at its rear New Street, 25 ft. 6 in, wide, and on its west an open area.
The President notified the Secretary with reference to this plan :-* Please circu- late, as theatre on this site is in my opi- nion very undesirable, situated as it would be close to the Tung Wah and near to the Government Civil Hospital. The noises from such a building would be very detri- mental to the comfort and well-being of the There are already two large patients. Chinese theatres in this noighbourhood.'
The Medical Officer of Health:-I do not consider this plan at all satisfactory, as these Chinese theatresarealways occupied by a considerable number of persons and no yard space whatever is provided. The 4 ft. lane (shown on the plan] obstructed by staircases should be made an 8 ft. lane and unobstructed.

the people will follow it. If they want their opium-divans, spread them far apart and the people will go near to them By that as we can do a little towards stop- ping this overcrowding.
Mr Lau Chu-Pak-Sir, I do not quite agree with Mr Osborne. As far as I know, there are no opium-divans or restaurants near the present theatres. No doubt this, site is situated in one of the most insanitary and overcrowded localities, but I think it is more desimble to have an up-to-date building like this theatre than the present insanitary tenement houses there. So long, in my opinion, as the good derived from such a change will fully compensate for the additional noise, there should be по objection on the part of the Sanitary Board.
The President-You do not propose an amendment?

I think it rests more with you, sir, in your capacity of Principal Civil Medical Officer, to approach the Govern- on that subject. Still I have no ment objection to this being done. For the other matter, I generally agree that the building should be made to conform with the sanitary requirements of the Colony regard to open spaces.
Mr Lau Chu-Pak-I beg to move that the plan be passed with such alterations as the
Board may require.
On the two motions proposed by Dr Clark being put to the meeting, all (with the exception of Mr Lau Chu-pak, who declined to vote) supported the first; the second was carried by 4 votes to 3, the minority being Messrs. C.-McI. Messer, Fung Wa Chun, and Lau Chu-pak.
