cannot cleanse the dress and the com- plexion in the same soap water. - Some ladies, conspicuous for face-qualities, shown in pictures in the streets specially washed with a great somp. All famous actresses use much soap, and some soaps All the great have made great actresses, poets and writers of English literature have celebrated soap, and the mighty painters also. To everything that the English people have to sell they attach a female figure. She recommends and the public. purchases. England is sustained by the much-dresssed; also by the soap-washed and the half-dressed. On the walls are stuck fast many pictures of the last-men- tioned, revealing pieces of attiro which may be purchased but not named. The bodies of the females observed in the streets are their own. They are encased. The real bodies are to be best studied in the wall-pictures. In England modesty means silence. That is the secret of Eng- land's greatness. If the people were to speak concerning what they see the con- versation would be shocking. Therefore their groat self-control. Many of the ladies of the wall-pictures are to be observed in the fore-seats of the theatres near to the music and next to the half-clad performers. The female spectators become more and more dressed as they retreat from the stage and pay less for their seats. Strangely the seats of the half-dressed are called the dressed seats. From the for-off, seats come the laughter and approval. There they enjoy themselves fully covered.
At the house the English landlady is affable and is visible at every meal, he smiles much, speaks always, and charges the maximuni. But yet she is a special study which I have not yet fathomed..

so livingly white. That is the true great- ness of England: the white girls at Henley. In the evening they rush to the station for Paddington. You may more amid them freely as in heaven, crowd with them into the train, journey swift to Paddington in their company, and see them pass away into black London in ones and twos and threes, all with their accompanying man. They leave you alone, you stand and gaze at them disappearing into the waste city like rose leaves scattered over a desert. In my next communication I will treat of more business matters.-The Outlook,
Childhood is the formative period, of manhood and womanhood. As the child is so is the adult. Hence, health is most necessary during this important stage of. 585 physical development. Sensation at San Francisco.
San Francisco, Sopt. 4.An attempt was made last night to assassinate, in his home, Frederick Marriott, publisher and owner of the News Letter, a weekly paper devoted largely to personal paragraphs. His assail- about ants were two well known men
town, who shot him three times. It is also stated that two shots were fired at Mrs Marriott. when she ran to her husband's assistance, after he fell, wounded.
The two men who tried to kill Marriott are Thomas H. Williams, Jr., President of the Califoruin Jockey Club, and Hon. Truxton Beale, who was United Statos Minister to Persia and subsequently to Greece. Williams is a millionaire by in- heritance, and has for fifteen years been prominent among sportsmen in San Fran cisco. Beale was a son-in-law of James G. Blaine. Both are popular clubmon.
Neither will state who fired the shots which wounded Marriott, but the publisher says Williams did the shooting. Desertions From H.M.S. 'Ariadne.'
Quebec, Sept. 2. It is learned that desertions by the wholesale have taken place from H.M.S. Ariadne since her ar- rival at Halifax, and her run from that port to Quebec. Nearly 100 seamen havo desorted, and 20 of this number since the frigate arrived in the harbor of Quebec. The Ariadne is only about three months in commission and the loss of her crew by desertion is alarming. Ono of the ship's crew said that on one occasion a whole boat's crew, including the coxswain, who rowed to shore on duty deserted, leaving the boat tied up at the landing. He also said that there were men at Halifax always ready to aid seamon to desert, even going. to the length of furnishing them with money and seeing them safely across the line into American territory, and he had been twice approached by civilians at Ifali- fax who tried to make him desert with an offer of assistance.

The Chefoo autumn race meeting was held on the 17th and 18th September. This time they might be called the Chefoo and Weihaiwei races, as Weihaiwei sent a good representation, Licut. . One or two brave ladies in Melbourne have adopted sandals for out-door wear with stockings-brown stockings with toes. The effect, though it may be comfortable, is by no means becoming, Sandals do not suit twentieth century dress; they require a toga, or some loose flowing garment. With a tailor-made gown they look quite absurd. Modes that make for health are frequently very ugly. CONTINGENT.
The Incident at Ottawa. One of the Hongkong Coronation Con- tingent writes to us as follows:-
Ottawa was reached at daylight ou the 1st September. The Mayor was early on the scene, and welcomed the Contingent to the Capital. Hended by the genial Mayor, the men were taken through the Parliament buildings and visited other sights.
Later in the day the Contingent paraded at Parliament Square, and were reviewed by Lord Minto. The 10th U.S. Cavalry Regiment, to the number of about 300, were on a visit to Ottawa, being invited by the Canadians to promote friendly feel. ing between the two countries. Not an uninteresting part of the proceedings was the inspection of the American troops by the Governor General, which was held at the same time. Both our contingent and the Americans were accorded a tremendous ovation, and it was a gala day for Ottawa.
The Hongkong Coutingent were provided with lunch at Hotel Russel, and in the afternoon were driven in electric cars to the grounds of the Exhibition which had only recently been closed and upon which Labour Day sports were being held, as well as to other places of interest. During the day they also witnessed part of the pro gress of the Labour Day procession. The President Roosevelt's temperature is people of Ottawa were exceedingly en- thusiastic in their reception of the visitors, and altogether the Volunteers had a glorious day.

One of the Chineso fell into the mass of liquid fire and the other two were badly burned. The poor fellow who foll into the crucible never regained consciousness and died in great agony. Old soldiers who have scan gruesome sights on the battlefield claim they never saw anything so terrible to gaze upon.
One of the survivors, for the other two will die, had all his scalp burned off his head and the side of his face was fearfully scalded. Both of them are terribly burned on the arms and legs, the flesh hanging in shreds.

PACIFIC.
A panic occurred at a negro Baptist con vention at Birmingham, Ala., last night, as the result of a false alarm of fire sound. ed while services were being held. The delegates stampeded and many desperate efforts were made by those in the front of the hill to get to the exits. The doors were narrow, and men and women were❘ trampled under foot while endeavoring to be first at the exit. It was pandemonium for a while, and when the mad rush was
over it was found that at least one hundred people had perished.
One Month, One Transport. Hereafter there will be only one trans- port to sail each month from San Francisco for Manila. Four Pacific transports have been transferred by the Secretary of War to the Navy, and others will probably be taken off, after a time, and turned over to the saine Department.

SENSATIONAL STATEMENTS IN NEW ZEALAND.
Before the close of the prescut year (says the Vancouver News Advertiser) the Pacific Cable is expected to be laid and in operation. This will give direct communi- cation between Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Canada. With the land lines across the Dominion and the cables across the Atlantic from Nova Scotia and New. foundland, there will be cable communica-
tion between Great Britain and Australasia by an all-British line. Within two years, the utility and advantages of the Pacific Cable will be still further augmented by connecting lines with Hongkong and India, thus affording the Imperial Government an alternative line of communication with India and the Far East. The importance of this under certain contingencies can
scarcely be overrated, and it will mark the accomplishment of a considerable part of the system recommended by the Depart-

The completion of the Pacific Cablo will mark an epoch in the development of the Pacific and the expansion of the commerce between the millions of people on the lit- torals of that ocean. This cable will not be the only one to traverse the depths of the Pacific. A charter has been granted recently for an American cable across the Pacific to Guam and thence to Manila, touching at the Hawaiian Islands, By cable from the latter to Fanning Island connection will be made between the Bri- tish and American lines and a very com- plete circuit for commercial purposes will
