A NEW SHALLOW DRAUGHT STEAMER.

A now type of shallow draught screw stoainer, which has been designed by Messrs. Yarrow and Co., of Poplar, yester- day ran a preliminary trial trip on the

projecting ber

Thames. The vessel has been built for trading purposes on South American rivers where shillow draught is an essential feature in the navigation. She is 75ft. ong by Dift. wide, and will carry, when fully loaded, 20 tons. The machinery is of the usual type so far as the engines and boiler are concerned. The propeller, how- ever, is so placed that with a diameter of 24ft. it can be fully immersed when the boat is drawing no more than 11in... and that without its

low the bottom.

It may be stated "that Mossrs. Yarrow have already constructed several smallsteamers, both for war purposes and for trading, in which the diameter of the screw is considerably greater than the draught of the boat. It will make the description clearor, perhaps, if we describe, the older method before dealing with the. latest arrangement. In the vessels pre- viously constructed the after part of the bottom, or run,' is made very flat, as it must necessarily be in shallow draught craft. The central part of the bottom plating is arched up so as to formi a tunne! in the after part of the rossel. This tunne! is not only arched in cross section, but also in longitudinal section, its highest point rising considerably above the normal water plane at which the boat florts. In this tunnel the screw revolves, the propeller shaft going through a stuffing-box in the plating much in the usual way. It will there- fore be seen that the summit of the tunnel. being above the waterlevel, is filled withair. and the upper part of the propellor, prob-- ably two-thirds, is out of water. The

the pressure of the atmosphere on the surface of the surrounding sea drives

water up to fill the vacuum thus form- ed. In this way, so along as the vessel is going, the screw is completely sub- merged and works with maximum effi- be ciency, being in solid water. It may added that in most screw vessels, ex

cepting those of very deep draught, there is a tendency on the part of the propeller to draw down air, and this often leads to a serious loss of power. In the case of vessels of the type described the steel plat- ing of the tunnel which almost surrounds. the screw prevent this undesirable action. In order to reach the end described, it should be remembered, the bottoni edges of the tunnel must be beneath the normal otherwise water plane; would not be formed, and the water would rise to cover the propeller. This, however, leads to a serious drawback in the system.. The propeller race, or water sent aft by the screw, is largely thrown against the down- ward sloping after part of the tunnel; and. though the latter is eased off to as flat an angle as possible, this deflection of the race. naturally absorbs a great deal of power. This is more especially the cago when a vessel is loaded; for, naturally, the bot must be designed for the edges of her tun- nel to be immersed even when she is at he

the greatest height, it is carried along with the top of the arch parallel with the water level. The exit astorn is therefore shove the water level, so that air would be admit ted, thus vitiating the principle, were not special incans taken to prevent it. Aft of the propeller is a hinged flap or shutter made of plate steel. This is so arranged that it hinges on the roof of the tunnel, its forward ond--where it hinges-being just aft of the propeller. When this flap is Jowered its after end dips under water, and it thus forms an after downward inclined

roof to the tunnel and enables the vacuum

to be formed and the water lifted when the

acrew revolves in the manner already descri- bed. It should be stated that the tunnel is made of rectangular section where the Aup is.

By this ingenious device Messrs. Yar- row have overcome the one great objection to the tunnel-enclosed method of screw propulsion; which, in spite of the drawback to which reference has been made, has been found to possess great advantages for shal- low water service. Up to recent times it has been considered that paddle-wheel steamors were necessary for such purposes, because inmersion could not be obtained for the screw. With side-wheel s'eamers the extra width needed was often a surious objection in new countries and narrow chan nels, The stern-wheel arrangement over, comes this difficulty, but in all paddle-wheel vessels the machinery is both expensive and heavy, andits weight presents anotherserious difficulty when light draught is a necessary feature. A screw engine will make two or three revolutions to une of a paddle steamer, and with equal power developed would be very much lighter. At varying draughts the paddle wheel with radial floats is a very inetlicient instrument; that is to say, it is efficient only at the draught for which it is designed; and when feathering floats are used the cost of upkeep is greatly augmented, owing to the wearing of bushes and joints. In some waters the upkeep of the feathering paddlo-wheels is equal in cost to that of the engines thenrselves.

In regard to practical results, it may be stated that the steamer to which reference has been made has steained at the rate of 9 miles per hour on a draught of 1lin. With a load of ten tons the draught was 20in., and the speed 83 miles per hour; and with 20 tons on board the draught was 28in. and the speed 7 miles. With a medium lond, ten tons, the fitting of the new arrangement enabled the speed to be increased over half a mile an hour, the same power being developed by the engines. This represents an increased efficiency of 25 per cent., since the power required in- creases approximately as the cube of the speed at these rates of steaming. At light draught, ie, with no load on board, the result was naturally not so marked, but still the gam was considerable, over a quar. ter of a mile per hour. In view of these facts it may be safely said that Messrs Yarrow have introduced a system which gives; results for light-draught navigation superior to those yet obtained from any class of paddle-wheel vessel. . WHAT IS PAIN BALM?

CHAMBERLAIN'S Pain Balm is a

liniment and, while adapted to all the ordinary uses of a liniment, has qualities which distinguish it from other remedies of

this class. Pain Balm is especially beneti

cial for rheumatismi. Thousands of cases can be cited in which it has effected a cure when the sufferer had previously tried tho best medical service without securing relief. Pain Balm is positively guaranteed to give relief in the most severe cases of chronic or acute rheumatism.

Pain Balm heals bruises, burns and scalds In less time than any other treatment. It is antiseptic' that is, it prevents putrefac- tion and by so doing, generally prevents an unsightly scar remaining after the injury is healed. For lame back, lumbago and neu- ralgia, Pain Balm has no equal, It has the. quality of getting to the right spot. No Bufferer from these distressing affections should defer a trial of this remedy. One application gives relief. Try it. For sale by All Dealers; WATKINS Ltd. General Agents.

Dr B. O'BRIEN, M.D., Civil Surgeon, Faizabad, says :--Mr N. Lazarus, optician, examined my vision to day, and I have much pleasure in testifying to the accuracy with which he determined the proper glasses for me to wear. His method of examination is a very ingenious and ac curate one, and by it he should be able to ascertain the proper glasses for the cor- rection of all the errors of refraction met with in the eye,

Surgeon-Major G. O. HALL, in charge of the Eye Hospital, Allahabad, says :-I have tested your Patent Refraction Test, and find it remarkably good and accurate, and I think it should prove very useful to all who are called upon to treat errors of rofraction, specially Astigmatism, which is BO common and yet so frequently over- looked.
