The experiments wern undertaken because' sertain 'experts' had declared that it a submarino kred a torpedo ut aj battleship, the texplosive (supposing the torpedo to have taken effect) would in- evitably have stove in the sides of the underwater craft. The torpedo people at Newport constructed a large tank in the shape of a cigur, and provided with many compartiments. In these com- partments were placed different kinds of animals-exits, dogs, birds-and the tank was then sunk to a certain depth in the water. An extremely heavy charge of explosive was placed within 500 ft. of the tanks and sired. When the tank, was raised to the surface it was found. that the animals had apparently not suffered in the least.
The tank was then submerged again, and moved up cluser to the explosive. Sull the ranimals felt no ill effects after the explosion. The experiment was repeated several times, sund the tank | was moved closer and closer to the i charge. Finally, at close range, the sides of the tank showed a slight depres sign, and the animals were stammed; on eeming to the open air again, however, į all revived.
