The year that has passed has not been an is one with Bungkung players, but the aptivity has been undoubtedly less than in Tho knock-out the two previous years, and all-against-all cournaments of the spring dragged heavily, and many ganies had to go by default. Proposed matches ke the International and the one with Kowloon failed to occur, and the same thing zseme likely to repeat itsell this asason. | The championship passed in April from Mr. Pullock to Mr Sours, and is now held by Captain Chapmoli.

On June 1 began the most important chess event of the year, the great tourna ment of Vienna, in which Tarrasch and

Pillsbury tied for first place, and the former won when the tie was played of. The contort was followed by one at Cologne, won by Mr Born, the Liverpool player,. Charoosak, Cohn and Tchigorin sharing the second place. The obituary of the year in- cludes such well-known names as Charles Gilberg, the Muconss of American chess and Mr James Rayner, the probleinist.

In the world at large the year began with the contest for the Australian Champion. ship, in which Mr Jacobsen had an easy win from Mr Jonas. February brought T

Mesars Wed. Į“” k Bu important cortest between Pillsbury and Showalter for the Charopion- ship of the United States. This was a harder Tr fight, and resulted in the retention of his position by the holder. In March the annual Cable match with Great Britain was, played and the British again won five games to three, having to by

win now once more.to becomb the poenes- sors of the News Trophy.

Altogether the year that has passed though not so busy as 1895 and 1896 shows more work done for chess than 1897. It has shown no startling changes and produced

1899 is to be made memorable by the great International Two-wound Tournament in Tondon. towards the expenses of which some 2000 has been already subscribed, an that a success may beconfidently anticipat ed. The players themolyan will probably complain of the two-round system, the fact that there are only some thirty chess being masters of first-class rok, and they nutar ally wish to share the valuable prizes with the minimum of individual effort. But things are seen otherwise by the chess public, who provide the fands and wish to obtain the fairest test and the Largest amonat of good play for their money.

FIND, I regard Chamberlain's Pain Balm as a moet useful household medicine. Have seen it used for toothaches rheumatism, and ones on a very bad alled foot, and in each of these instances the Pain Balm acted like a charm.

Every one who does Chamberlain's Pain Batm always spusks in the same terms. It should be kept in every medicine chest.

CHAMBERLAIN'S PAIN BALet for sale everywhere. Price, 50 cts., and $1. General Agents-WAYKINH & Ó.
