HONGKONG, THURSDAY, JANUARY 20, 1898,

The question of the erection of Public Offices for this Colony haa teen exercising the minds of the Executive for three or four years past It is now an open secret that two schemes for attaining this end have boon presented to the Govern montons by the Director of Public Works (Hon. D. Ormsby), and the other by the Hon. C. P. Chater. We are net as yet in a position to give all the par ticulars of those two schemes proposed, but: one of the salient points which appeals to the general comunity may be montioned. While Mr Ormsby proposentoretain the Post Offee and Treasury in their prosent position (to occupy the present Post Office and Supreme Court sites), MrChater suggests that the Post Office should be moved to the New Praya Reclamation near The Club. Wo find that a very strong feeling czista against the removal of the Post Office from its present central position; and, apart from all other considerations of uncentration of public offices--it is impossible to get all the Public Offices of the Colony emmed between the City Hall and the new Fraya -we deem it incumbent upon us to sound a note of warning against taking the Post Office farther fast than its present site. No one will question that the var luable space near the City Hall, the Hong- kong Bark and the Hongkong Club must hold much of the wealth and influence of the Colony from erinmercial point of view; but the general community of Bongkong are not all located in that
