Australian and Canadian opinion also seemed to favour the Pacific cable, but a wonderful alteration has taken place in public opinion and the scheme' is now left, as it has been said in mid-air. the indignation which the original increases had created. In the Far East, therefore, we are not likely to hear much of the Pacifio cable scheme for a considerable time, unless the Directorate of the monopolies are so ill-advised as to attempt to pinch another serious increase out of their Eastern cus | tomam..

As far as the self-governing Colonies are concerned the project appears to be shelv- ed indefinitely. Mr Chamberlain, in his capacity of Secretary of State for the Colo- nies, took advantage of the presence of the Colovini Premiere at the Record Reign ce lebrations to hold a conference on colonial topics.
