Although no other border tribes are mentioned, it is not Improbable that the uprising is general, but sides of the tasks that lies before the Indian troops may be formed when we mention that the Afridis and the Orakzais alone can place upwards of 200,000 fighting men in the field.

The rising of the Afridin common D 3 surprise. Hitherto they have been friendly to Britain, and have never given trouble, not even during the Afghan War of 1979. 60. They inhabit the region lying inme diately to the north of Peshawar, and the Drakzais (who claim to be Afridis but who are repudiated by the main tribe) necupy the hilly backbone whicis penetrates the Punjab between Kohat and Fishswar. This lattor tribe in notorious for its riffe-

stealing proclivities, and has repeatedly iven trouble on the frontier, with ant showing actual hostility. Both tribes may be spoken of as Pathane so in appostance are not unlike the Pathan Company of the Hongkong Regi- ment. They are born fighters, highlanders of a handy type, insured to danger and privation, and fearless in the face of a foe.. But ose tribe will probably operate in dependently like the Scottish highlanders of old, and therein will be their chiof weskuels. We know that 20,000 trained.
