The Chief Engineer has spent it is understood that ately at Poking, and rest deal of time there is absolutely no difficulty in the way of proceeding with the work. These two officers will soon moot repicaontatives of Manchurian inter- cats, and then certain little formalitics willlo adjented, and the final surrey will be begut. I expected the survey will be completed in two or three months time. As nearly as can be determined now, there will be an actual saving in disksuve of about 1,000 vonta-something like 700 ur 200 English miles-by running thy road through Maneharia Whe this is of course a very important consideration, cupecially in view

of of the rather peculiar topography, that part of Siberia through which the rund would am if it was built up and around Manoharia stead of across the upper or northern extension of that country,

*thurs are other very important, considerations. The construction of the line according to the original plan-entirely on Russian territory would on great difficulty to be encountered in mid-winter. It is thought by many that it would be next to impossi ble to keep the road open in winter if it rau as for to the morth as would be required in getting round Manchuria. The Russian Government, it is said, is determined that this road, built primarily for military pur- poses, shall be open at all seasons of the

year.
